Our Environment division delivers a wide range of landscaping, vegetation management, and ecology projects across the UK. As our operations continue to grow, we are seeking an Assistant Estimator to contribute to the end-to-end tendering process. This role can be based at either our Carlisle or Elvetham office.
The Position
Reporting to the Senior Estimator, this is an exciting opportunity for individuals early in their careers who have strong analytical skills, good attention to detail, and an interest in the landscape, forestry, or construction sectors.
Key Responsibilities
- Assist in preparing cost estimates for soft and hard landscaping, habitat creation, tree planting, vegetation management, and maintenance works.
- Review tender documents, specifications, drawings, and Bills of Quantities to understand project scope and requirements.
- Obtain and compare supplier and subcontractor quotations for materials, plant, and specialist services.
- Support the development of pricing schedules, rate build-ups, and cost models.
- Contribute to written method statements, programme notes, and technical responses.
- Maintain accurate estimating data, including price lists, labour/plant rates, and historical tender records.
- Support the preparation of tender submission packs, ensuring accuracy, consistency, and compliance.
- Organise and manage documentation in line with company tendering procedures.
- Undertake occasional site visits with senior staff to understand project constraints and site conditions.
- Assist in identifying risks related to ground conditions, access, traffic management, ecology, and programme constraints.
- Work closely with operational teams to understand production rates, methods, and resource requirements.
- Liaise with suppliers and subcontractors to request, clarify, and validate quotations.
- Provide administrative support to the estimating and bid team as required.
Training and support will be provided to introduce the successful applicant to company systems and procedures.
Qualification / Experience/ Skills
- Strong numeracy and analytical skills.
- Excellent attention to detail and accuracy in written work.
- Competent in Microsoft Excel and Microsoft 365 tools.
- Ability to read and interpret basic drawings/plans (training provided).
- Well organised, with the ability to manage multiple deadlines.
- Good written and verbal communication skills.
- Eagerness to learn and develop technical skills.
- Positive and proactive attitude, with a willingness to take responsibility.
- Ability to work both independently and as part of a team.
- Interest in the environment, sustainability, or outdoor industries.
- Full UK driving licence and willingness to travel to project sites nationwide.
- HNC/HND or degree in Landscape Management, Environmental Science, Construction Management, Forestry, or a related field.
- Experience in landscape contracting, forestry, arboriculture, environmental management, or construction.
- Knowledge of tendering or estimating processes.
- Familiarity with NEC/JCT contracts or industry specifications.
- Understanding of plant, labour, and material costs associated with landscape works.
- Experience using estimating or bid-management software.
