This is a fulltime, permanent position working Monday – Friday.
The purpose of this job is to take the lead in managing day-to-day biology laboratory operations in support of Discovery Research. This position will involve co-ordination of both scientific and operational stakeholders to manage laboratory activities for the London Client sites.
Job Responsibilities:
- Lab technician role – laboratory house-keeping, boxes, report unexpected items, oversee laboratory waste-streams including recycling and glass wash, regular maintenance checks on equipment such as lab freezers requiring defrosting procedures and incubator steri-runs/auto-start, and laboratory contact for the environmental monitoring system
- Perform a daily goods inward service for all deliveries: scientific supplies, equipment, and post. Monitor Laboratory chemical and equipment inventory and co-ordinate ordering of chemicals.
- Liaise with Laboratory Asset Management Program and Laboratory IT coordinators to schedule preventative maintenance and repair for all laboratory equipment including microbiological safety cabinets, incubators, fume hoods, pipettes and balances.
- Liaise with the Stockroom Specialist to ensure optimal laboratory supply and chemical inventory.
- Act as the Client Authorised Person for Dangerous Goods and complete final compliance checks for all packages being shipped from the site to ensure they meet the required specifications. Provide cover for organising domestic shipments when needed.
- Responsible for filing disposition of laboratory equipment that are no longer required. Responsible for decontaminating equipment for collection.
- Oversee and create rotas for weekly and monthly lab maintenance and cleaning and cell culture staff organisation.
- Laboratory contact and responsible for sample inventory management system (Benchling) including managing rota for disaster recovery response process.
- To keep their training records up to date and participate in and initiate training as required by the customer or directed by the Lead Scientist.
- To adhere to all customer standards in the areas of safety, housekeeping and quality, notifying management of any discrepancies.
- To have a clear understanding of the customer relationship and service goals.
- To ensure that all decisions are handled with customer service in mind.
- Act as the daily liaison (single point of contact) with key client stakeholders for all London laboratory operational needs: new hires, scientists, vendor deliveries, operational support lines.
- Enable efficient operation of the laboratory, including routine cleaning/maintenance of key laboratory equipment.
- Troubleshooting laboratory operational issues to resolve or escalate in a timely manner to enable smooth operations of laboratories, coordinating with scientists, facilities, health and safety and IT as required.
- Responsible for maintaining internal records on progress of day-to-day operations and laboratory services and keeping internal stakeholders up to date on progress.
- Comply with UK and company H&S requirements and support safety inspections and action follow-up.
- Management of projects with external vendors and contracting third parties to ensure smooth equipment onboarding, site inspection and commissioning, or repair.
- Maintain accurate records for equipment, purchase orders and close-out activities. Promote and adhere to corporate policies, ensuring compliance and protection of company assets
- To ensure uniformity, reproducibility and reliability in all work practices.
Qualifications
- BA/BSc degree in Biological Sciences or equivalent scientific subject.
- Relevant industry experience in a life sciences laboratory support environment.
- Experience with laboratory management IT systems e.g. procurement, SAP, purchase orders,
- Familiar with the maintenance and use of biological research laboratory equipment e.g. cell culture hoods, incubators, centrifuges, imaging and liquid handling instruments.
- Knowledge of common laboratory operating procedures – Health & safety, business continuity.
- Experience working with external partners or vendors to support laboratory operations.
- Must possess strong communication, project management, interpersonal skills, both verbal and written
- Good organisational skills and record-keeping
- Demonstrate a proactive attitude, flexibility and the ability to work well as part of a team
- Ability to quickly learn new processes. Works proactively to offer suggestions for new ways to improve existing processes.
- Ability to work on own initiative and be capable of developing solutions to problems as part of a team.
- Willing to operate in a flexible manner and be able to switch priorities at short notice. Seeks new ideas to make improvements within own area of control.
- Ability to work using fully electronic media, including MS Office.
- Good team player, organised, accurate, have strong documentation skills.
