Job Description

We are seeking a forensic analyst to examine substances suspected of containing controlled drugs in accordance with the Misuse of Drugs Act 1971 and related legislation. The role involves producing witness statements and attending court proceedings as required.

Key Responsibilities and Accountabilities

  • Conduct examination and analysis of exhibits following SOPs, within documented competencies and timeframes.
  • Adhere to all customer operational protocols and the Eurofins Quality Manual.
  • Maintain accurate, contemporaneous notes, signed and dated as per SOPs.
  • Ensure the integrity and continuity of exhibits under your ownership.
  • Communicate effectively with team members throughout case investigations.
  • Develop case-specific examination strategies for complex cases and instruct others as appropriate.
  • Discuss findings with investigators and CPS, and prepare reports or statements for court.
  • Mentor and coach junior staff and trainees, promoting best practices and quality standards.
  • Advise clients through training or direct contact, and seek continuous improvement in methodologies and processes.
  • Recognize and escalate potential quality or health and safety issues early.
  • Participate in laboratory cleaning and ensure compliance with the Forensic Regulators Codes of Practice.

Qualifications

Essential requirements include a recognized qualification in a relevant scientific discipline, excellent communication skills, laboratory experience, and familiarity with drug legislation and forensic standards. Candidates must be fully trained in standard drug analysis and familiar with less common drugs.

Skills & Experience

Developing Reporters should be capable of reporting on basic substances such as powders, cannabis, and tablets, with progression to more complex evidence types. Established Reporters should demonstrate achievement of KPIs, experience in mentoring, and advanced skills such as profiling, complex methods, and peer review. Completion of a court awareness course and adherence to forensic codes are also required.

Additional Information

This role requires security clearance, which involves a background check including five years of UK residency. Successful candidates will undergo drug and alcohol testing prior to employment.
