Job Description
An opportunity has arisen to join our dedicated team of forensic DNA analysts responsible for carrying out rigorous examination of biological evidence ranging from simple swabs to items that are used in criminal activity that require targeted examination. Delivering scientifically robust profiles that support accurate identification and strengthen investigative outcomes.
The role comprises carrying out high throughput DNA profiling of samples, working flexibly and communicating effectively to deliver results within contractual TRT’s and to the highest quality standards. You will be joining a team that has been commended for its commitment to serving the Criminal Justice System.
EFS DNA laboratories, located in Birchwood Park, serve multiple customers and are continuously working to develop new DNA technologies for forensics. An extended range of forensic DNA techniques is offered covering all routine and specialist analyses, available on demand. The PACE laboratory provides rapid, cost-effective DNA profiling of reference samples, with results loaded to the National DNA Database or made available to Reporting Officers for comparison. The DNA Crime Stain team carries out DNA profiling from a wide range of sample types to assist in investigations. Our services are noted for exceptionally high success rates, rapid turnaround times and competitive pricing.
This role is based on a 37.5-hour working week, operating on a rotating shift pattern:
Tuesdat to Saturday:
Week 1: 7:00am – 3:00pm
Week 2: 2:00pm – 10:00pm
Key Accountabilities:
- Carry out the testing and documentation of forensic samples with confidence and minimal supervision, working to established SOPs and agreed timelines after completing the required training and competency assessments.
- Perform STR profiling on a wide range of exhibits and samples, applying both routine and specialist techniques such as DNA extraction, quantification, PCR, data analysis, and the preparation of clear, accurate reports.
- Uphold the highest standards of Good Laboratory Practice (GLP) and maintain strict compliance with all quality systems.
- Support the smooth running of the laboratory through essential housekeeping tasks, including sample archiving and disposal, equipment upkeep, cleanliness, and stock monitoring.
- Champion a right first time mindset by identifying and reporting non conformances or near misses, and contributing to meaningful process improvements.
- Drive Continuous Improvement (CI) by actively seeking opportunities to enhance efficiency, accuracy, and workflow across both scientific and operational activities.
- Communicate clearly and collaboratively with colleagues and team leads to maintain an efficient, well coordinated laboratory process.

Additional Information
Due to the highly sensitive nature of the work, applicants should note that security clearance is required for this role. To gain security clearance you must have five years continuous residency in the UK. Security clearance is undertaken by a third party to police personnel vetting standards (NPPV3 and SC). As such, any criminal convictions (including criminal convictions held by: you, your partner, parents, siblings, children over the age of 10, and anyone living with you who doesn’t fit these relationships) may prevent you from gaining security clearance.
