Company Description

Purpose of the Role

As a Senior EMC Test Engineer, you will play a key role in delivering complex and high-integrity electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) testing for defence and aerospace programmes within one of the UK’s most capable EMC laboratories. At AQL EMC Ltd, now part of the larger Eurofins Electrical & Electronics network of laboratories, you’ll work alongside engineers with over 40 years of hands-on EMC test experience. This level of technical heritage provides a unique opportunity for talented engineers to both learn from seasoned experts and help shape the future of the facility.

Following the recent acquisition of AQL EMC by Eurofins and investment programme, our laboratory is expanding rapidly, developing new capabilities and infrastructure to support tests that many other labs cannot perform. This is a hands-on, technically challenging role where you’ll contribute directly to delivering exceptional results for aerospace and defence customers, while progressing toward recognised Subject Matter Expert (SME) status within the global Eurofins Electrical & Electronics network.

Key Responsibilities

  • Perform and lead EMC testing to military and aerospace standards within our UKAS-accredited facilities.
  • Travel to customer premises or off-site testing locations will be a significant part of this role.
  • Act as a senior technical authority during test preparation and execution — guiding set-ups, troubleshooting, and ensuring full compliance with standards and customer requirements.
  • Engage with customers to clarify requirements, provide technical advice, and support the creation of test plans and quotations.
  • Support the development of new test capabilities and specialist methods enabled by recent investment.
  • Produce and review detailed technical documentation, including test procedures, logs, and formal reports.
  • Collaborate with, and learn from, engineers with decades of EMC experience — sharing knowledge and mentoring developing engineers to raise overall technical competence.
  • Drive continuous improvement initiatives across the lab, ensuring high standards of technical quality, efficiency, and safety.

Skills & Experience – Essential

  • Extensive hands-on experience performing EMC/EMI testing to MIL-STD-461, DEF STAN 59-411, RTCA DO-160, or equivalent aerospace/defence standards.
  • Strong understanding of EMC test methodologies — radiated/conducted emissions and susceptibility, shielding effectiveness, ESD, and transient tests including lightning.
  • Proven ability to interpret specifications, develop test plans, and execute complex test campaigns independently.
  • Skilled in the use and configuration of EMC test equipment (antennas, amplifiers, LISNs, receivers, etc.).
  • Demonstrated troubleshooting ability and problem-solving skills in a laboratory environment.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills for effective interaction with customers and internal teams.
  • Eligible for, or currently holding, UK Security Check (SC) clearance.
  • Organised, adaptable, and proactive — committed to delivering high-quality, reliable test results.

Skills & Experience – Desirable

  • Experience in a UKAS ISO/IEC 17025 accredited test environment.
  • Previous mentoring or team-leading responsibilities.
  • HNC/HND or degree in Electrical/Electronic Engineering or related discipline.

Personal Attributes

  • Practical, technically confident, and detail-oriented.
  • Motivated by working in an environment rich with real-world EMC expertise and learning opportunities.
  • Customer-focused, with a professional and credible approach.
  • Flexible and collaborative, able to thrive in a high-skill, fast-paced environment.
  • Committed to maintaining security, safety, and quality standards.

Why Join Us

  • Work alongside engineers with over four decades of EMC test experience, gaining mentorship and exposure to truly unique test programmes.
  • Be part of a leading-edge laboratory capable of performing EMC tests that many other facilities cannot.
  • Contribute directly to the growth and innovation resulting from our ongoing investment.
  • Opportunities for progression toward Subject Matter Expert or leadership roles within the global network of Eurofins Electrical & Electronics laboratories.
