Job Description

The Waste Disposal Technician is responsible for the safe handling, treatment, and disposal of clinical and microbiological waste generated within a food testing laboratory.
The role ensures that pathogen-contaminated waste is processed through the site waste disposal instrument in accordance with company procedures, biosafety requirements, and relevant waste legislation.
This is a full time role 37.5 hours per week - Monday to Friday 10:00 till 18:00.
- Collect, handle, and process laboratory pathogen waste in accordance with approved procedures and biosafety requirements.
- Operate the on-site waste disposal instrument safely and effectively to treat microbiological waste prior to disposal.
- Ensure all waste is correctly segregated and prepared before treatment.
- Monitor the performance of the waste disposal instrument and report any faults or operational issues.
- Complete required records relating to waste treatment, disposal, maintenance checks, and equipment usage.
- Ensure appropriate use of personal protective equipment (PPE) when handling laboratory waste.
- Remove general waste, recycling, and glass waste from designated waste corridors and laboratory areas.
- Transfer waste to appropriate collection, storage, or disposal locations.
- Ensure waste containers are available, correctly labelled, and maintained in good condition.
- Support recycling initiatives and promote effective waste segregation throughout the laboratory.
- Maintain waste corridors, storage areas, and disposal facilities to a high standard of cleanliness and organisation.
- Conduct routine inspections of waste storage and treatment areas.
- Immediately report spills, safety concerns, equipment defects, or non-conformances.
- Assist with contamination control and housekeeping activities as required.
- Follow site health, safety, environmental, and quality policies at all times.
- Participate in training programmes and continuous improvement activities.
- Maintain compliance with laboratory quality systems, health and safety procedures, and waste management regulations.
Qualifications
Essential
- Good understanding of health and safety practices.
- Ability to follow standard operating procedures accurately.
- Good organisational skills and attention to detail.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Physically capable of moving waste containers and handling waste safely.
- Basic computer skills for record keeping and documentation.
Desirable
- Previous experience working in a laboratory, waste management, environmental services, healthcare, food manufacturing, or related environment.
- Knowledge of microbiological or clinical waste handling procedures.
- Understanding of ISO quality systems and laboratory compliance requirements.
- Manual handling training.
- Experience working within a UKAS-accredited laboratory environment.
