Postdoctoral Research Associate / Fellow Position funded by the Royal Society, full‑time, fixed‑term from 7th September 2026 to 30th August 2030. Salary: £34,610 to £39,906 on Grade E for the Postdoctoral Research Associate level, and £43,482 on Grade F for the Postdoctoral Research Fellow level. Applicants may work part‑time or in a job‑sharing arrangement.
Role Faculty of Environment, Science and Economy, Penryn, Cornwall. The successful candidate will work with Dr Rachael Miller (Harrison) on the Royal Society Dorothy Hodgkin Fellowship project: “Understanding the role of individual cognitive variation in reintroduction biology.”
Key responsibilities include:
- Conducting captive and field‑based conservation, ecological, behavioural and cognitive research primarily with birds.
- Engaging in interdisciplinary collaborations and co‑supervision of students and junior researchers.
- Contributing to project impact through the development of evidence‑based guidelines for captive management and reintroduction programmes.
Postdoctoral Research Associate – Requirements
- PhD or equivalent qualification/experience in conservation, ecology, comparative psychology, cognitive biology or a related field.
- Strong knowledge of conservation and ecology (essential); cognition and behaviour research with animals (desirable).
- Experience designing and executing experiments and/or observations in field (essential) and/or captive (desirable) settings, ideally with birds.
- Demonstrated success in research from conception to publication, including data management and statistical analysis.
- Excellent communication, teamwork and collaboration skills.
- Desirable skills: ecological tools and field equipment (e.g. RFID, GPS tracking), analytical tools (e.g. GIS, mixed modelling), experience creating impact beyond academia (policy/industry), zoo/industry experience, and knowledge of Open Science practices.
Postdoctoral Research Fellow – Requirements
- PhD or equivalent qualification/experience in a related field.
- Nationally recognised authority in conservation, ecology, comparative psychology, cognitive biology or a related area.
- Ability to develop research objectives, projects and proposals, and secure research funding.
- Experience supervising and leading research teams.
- Strong knowledge of conservation and ecology (essential); cognition and behaviour research with animals (desirable).
- Experience designing and executing experiments and/or observations in field (essential) and/or captive (desirable) settings, ideally with birds.
- Demonstrated success in research from conception to publication, including data management and statistical analysis.
- Excellent communication, teamwork and collaboration skills.
- Desirable skills: ecological tools and field equipment (e.g. RFID, GPS tracking), analytical tools (e.g. GIS, mixed modelling), experience creating impact beyond academia (policy/industry), zoo/industry experience, and knowledge of Open Science practices.
