Description
The senior data engineer will design, implement, and maintain the enterprise data architecture for ECP, encompassing data warehouse, data hub, data lake, raw/ODS layers, dimensional models, audit and schema‑change tracking, and the load schedules that bind them together.
Responsibilities
- Specify and deliver the target architecture for the ECP data estate, including the data warehouse, data hub, data lake, raw/ODS layers, dimensional model, audit and schema‑change tracking, and the load schedules.
- Perform hands‑on T‑SQL, stored procedure, ETL framework, and Power Shell development at expert level, focusing on partition design and indexing strategy.
- Drive the in‑flight ETL replatform, replacing legacy SSIS jobs with a modern E‑L‑T framework and eliminating dependencies that hinder efficiency.
- Own the SQL estate end‑to‑end as the senior practitioner, managing security model design and rollout, backup and restore strategy, and performance triage.
- Act as design authority for the wider data team, coaching SQL developers on Power BI authorship and dimensional modelling, and reviewing data‑related changes.
- Own the Power BI / SSRS reporting platform, leading the SSRS‑to‑Power BI migration and overseeing data refresh strategies.
- Maintain the canonical data dictionary and data domain definitions, ensuring accuracy for engineering decisions across IT.
- Triage and resolve data‑related tickets from the application support service desk, including ETL job failures and ad‑hoc data corrections.
- Actively participate in all team ceremonies and contribute to forward planning for the SQL estate direction.
Qualifications & Experience
- 5+ years of expert‑level T‑SQL and SQL Server internals experience, including partitioning, indexing strategy, query plan analysis, dynamic SQL, and stored procedure design at scale.
- Experience with Redgate tooling such as Monitor, SQL Prompt, and SQL Source Control.
- Hands‑on data warehouse design and build using Kimball‑style dimensional modelling (fact/dim schemas), incremental and full‑load patterns, slowly changing dimensions, and ETL/ELT framework design.
- Production‑level ETL development with SSIS for legacy job decommissioning, and modern alternatives (custom T‑SQL frameworks, ADF, dbt, or equivalent) for new builds.
- Operational SQL Server experience as the senior responsible person, covering backups, restores, security, monitoring, performance triage, replication, and multi‑instance estate management.
- Proficiency in Azure SQL (database, managed instance, or both) with knowledge of security models (Entra ID groups), Paa S limitations, and migration patterns from on‑prem.
- Experience with Power BI / SSRS authorship and architecture, including dataset design, semantic model authoring, refresh and gateway strategy, DAX, M, and report‑developer coaching.
- Strong skills in data security model design: role‑based access controls, principle of least privilege, AD/Entra ID group design, schema‑level permissions, and elimination of shared/admin account patterns.
- Proficiency in Power Shell for SQL administration, ETL orchestration, and operational scripting.
- Familiarity with agile environments using JIRA and Confluence, including schema documentation and lineage management.
