The School of Engineering invites applications for a highly motivated Postdoctoral Research Fellow to join the University of Southampton. The successful candidate will engage in cutting-edge research in the dynamics of lattice-based mechanical metamaterials, under the mentorship of leading experts, aligned with one of the following priority research areas:

  • Design of multi-functional mechanical metamaterials
  • Dynamic and wave propagation analysis of smart structures and lattices
  • Experimental characterization of dynamic metamaterials

The ideal candidate will have a strong background in structural dynamics, wave propagation, smart structures, or mechanical metamaterials, with the ability to contribute across computational and experimental investigations. During the project, you will develop an independent research programme within the designated area while working with appropriate guidance, support, and supervision. You will collaborate within an interdisciplinary team, engage with industrial partners, and actively seek opportunities to translate research outcomes for wider impact.

You will be expected to publish in high-quality journals and present at leading conferences, contributing to the visibility and influence of the research. You will also participate in relevant academic forums and training activities to build advanced research skills and professional networks. In addition, you will contribute to the wider university research environment through activities such as seminars, workshops, and early career researcher forums, and support knowledge-sharing with project stakeholders.

The initial appointment is for one year, with the potential for continuation based on the progression of the project and the availability of funding. The Fellow will undertake research in collaboration with relevant industrial partners under the supervision of the award holder (Dr Tanmoy Mukhopadhyay). They are expected to contribute, where appropriate, to leadership, teaching, management and engagement activities linked to the project’s delivery and impact.
