Durham University’s Department of Physics invites applications for two research positions: a Research Assistant and a Postdoctoral Research Associate under the ERC Consolidator Grant project X‑MAPS, starting October 2026. Both roles are 2‑year contracts with possible extension, supervised by Dr Adam Ingram.
Role 1: Research Assistant
- Contribute to X‑MAPS project objectives, including development of fast X‑ray timing and polarimetry techniques.
- Train neural networks to replace advanced X‑ray timing and polarisation models (e.g., RELTRANS).
- Apply advanced Fourier timing methods to identify rapid spectral and polarimetric variability in black hole X‑ray binaries.
- Collaborate with CEA research teams on theoretical modelling of accreting black‑hole systems.
Qualifications:
- Graduate degree in physics, astrophysics or related field.
- Experience in theoretical modelling of accreting black holes and/or observational X‑ray timing and polarimetric analysis.
- Strong programming skills and familiarity with neural‑network frameworks.
- Excellent communication and teamwork abilities.
Role 2: Postdoctoral Research Associate
Responsibilities and qualifications are the same as for the Research Assistant role. Preference is given to applicants with advanced publications in the field.
