Position Overview

The Department of Psychology at Durham University seeks to appoint a talented individual to the role of Assistant Professor in Psychology.

We welcome outstanding candidates from all areas of psychology whose research applies computational approaches, including machine learning and artificial intelligence, to address research questions in psychology and/or neuroscience.

  • Research Responsibilities
  • Strengthen and complement one or more of the Department’s research groups: Cognitive Neuroscience, Developmental Science, and Quantitative Social Psychology.
  • Advance computational and data‑driven research, fostering interdisciplinary collaboration and methodological innovation.
  • Establish an internationally recognised research profile and secure external funding.
  • Contribute to the Department’s research infrastructure, including collaborative projects across University Research Centres.
  • Teaching Responsibility
  • Deliver outstanding teaching across undergraduate and postgraduate programmes.
  • Contribute to the Master’s programmes offered by the research groups.
  • Mentor students and support their academic development.
  • Service and Student Support
  • Full participation in the service, citizenship, and values of the University.
  • Engage in professional development and open science initiatives.

Qualifications

  • Recognised Researcher (R2) or Established Researcher (R3) status.
  • Excellent research profile with experience in computational methods.
  • Demonstrated ability to secure external funding.
  • Strong teaching record and commitment to inclusive education.
  • Experience working in interdisciplinary research teams.
  • Facilities

The Department is equipped with dedicated laboratories for EEG, TMS, t DCS, f NIRS, eye tracking, virtual reality, psychophysiology, and behavioural neuroscience.

Facilities also include a whole-body motion capture laboratory, a molecular diagnostics laboratory, and an echo-attenuated chamber available for research.
