Dear colleagues, dear ETPN members, Abzena has a vacancy for a Bioconjugation Scientist to join their Bioconjugation Chemistry team in Cambridge (UK). In this lab-based role, you will work as part of a team on client-facing, often short-term projects in a fast-paced and supportive environment. Please find the job description below.
Abzena provides comprehensive solutions in integrated early discovery to mid-phase biotherapeutic and ADC drug development services in the pharmaceutical industry. Working with a diverse range of customers—from academic groups to big pharma—and on various drug types such as antibodies, fusion proteins, and bioconjugates, Abzena supports the development and manufacture of improved treatments for patients. Notably, Abzena was awarded the best CRO at the World ADC Awards in 2020 for its outstanding expertise and quality in bioconjugate early development.
The Bioconjugation Group in Abzena Cambridge offers conjugation solutions to support partner ADC, oligonucleotide conjugate, PEGylation, and other conjugate development programs. Using established chemistries and its next-generation platform ThioBridge, along with a broad range of cargoes, the team designs, synthesizes, and produces ADC candidates for evaluation with support from the Design and Developability Groups for lead candidate selection.
Ideal candidates will hold a BSc or MSc in Chemistry, Protein Biochemistry, or a related field, with strong laboratory skills and at least 2 years of industrial experience, or a PhD in a relevant discipline. Relevant skills include practical research experience with bioconjugation of small molecules (e.g., cytotoxic drugs, fluorescent labels, oligonucleotides) and polymers to antibodies and proteins using various linker chemistries, purification techniques (such as ÄKTA systems and membrane ultrafiltration TFF), and analytical techniques (including HIC, SEC, IEX chromatography, UV-Vis spectrophotometry, CE-SDS, iCEF, and LC-MS). Proficiency in MS Office and specialized software like Chromeleon, Unify, MassLynx, and ChemDraw is expected. An understanding of the ADC field and drug development process is also desirable.
You should be capable of working independently and collaboratively, with good planning and organizational skills. Attention to detail, problem-solving abilities, and clear communication skills—both oral and written—are essential. You will also contribute to research efforts within the group.
