Help us “Elevate Education, Everywhere.” Here at Etio we are committed to Elevating Education, Everywhere and we are delighted to be working on behalf of the Department for Education in delivering the crucial national Attendance Mentoring programme in response to a national attendance challenge. Persistent and severe absence from school is having a huge impact on the education and life outcomes of young people across the UK. Absence rates are too high, and we want to provide structured support to get young people back into the classroom. It is our mission to provide mentorship support to persistently absent secondary school students across 10 areas within the UK.

The Opportunity

As Regional Director for the south of England, you will draw upon your subject matter expertise to play a pivotal role in securing the successful delivery of the AMP (Attendance Mentor Programme) within the region, achieving high levels of customer satisfaction from pupils, caregivers, and stakeholders: ultimately improving attendance rates through effective mentoring. You will lead a regional team of 5 Area Managers, each of whom oversee circa 5-7 attendance mentors. You will provide strong leadership to your teams, creating a positive working culture whilst driving strong performance outcomes. The role and area teams support 20+ schools. The programme is highly scrutinised and complex, requiring excellent stakeholder management with local education stakeholders, the DfE, other regulatory bodies, school leaders, and many others.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Being responsible for the effective delivery of the Attendance Mentors Programme across 5 within the region (West Somerset, Portsmouth, Hastings, Norwich, and Ipswich)
  • Supporting area teams to effectively navigate the secondary education system and ensure the programme adds value to each school's attendance strategy
  • Holding responsibility for the effective delivery of the programme within your region
  • Ensuring programme delivery against KPI’s & SLA’s whilst remaining on time, within budget and in alignment with the delivery strategy
  • Supporting the programme governance, quality assurance, monitoring, and evaluation
  • Acting as an advocate and contributing to thought leadership
  • Providing a credible presence to regional stakeholders while supporting Area Managers to lead localised stakeholder engagement

The Person

It is essential that the post holder has established expertise and credibility within the education sector, in particular relating to mentorship and/or addressing school attendance challenges. A deep understanding of the multifaceted needs of persistently absent students and their families is crucial for success in this role. Education programme leadership will be very advantageous, but as a minimum, you should have proven people leadership and management skills within a complex highly regulated environment. The successful candidates should have proven data analysis capabilities and a track record of data-driven decision-making, paired with outstanding stakeholder management skills and the ability to lead multiple organisations towards common objectives.

Qualifications, Experience and Skills

Qualifications

  • Degree level qualification or equivalent senior leadership experience, ideally within Education, Social Policy or a related field
  • Relevant leadership or management qualification desirable
  • Ongoing professional development in education, safeguarding, mentoring or programme leadership

Essential Experience

  • Significant experience within secondary school systems or education environments, with strong understanding of attendance frameworks, safeguarding and accountability structures
  • Proven experience leading team managers, driving performance through layered leadership structures
  • Proven experience delivering complex, multi-site or regional programmes within a regulated environment
  • Strong track record of senior stakeholder engagement across schools, local authorities, government departments or similar bodies
  • Experience working with vulnerable or persistently absent young people and understanding the barriers to attendance

Skills and Capability

  • Strategic leadership, able to translate national objectives into effective regional delivery
  • Strong performance management capability across KPIs, SLAs and budget oversight
  • Confident use of data to inform decisions, monitor impact and drive improvement
  • Excellent communication and influencing skills, with credible presence at senior level
  • Ability to build high performing, values-led teams across dispersed locations
