Ethos is an environmental planning consultancy based in the world heritage city of Bath and working across the UK. We are a multi‑disciplinary consultancy providing decision‑making in relation to planning with a focus on ecology, green space, and biodiversity net gain.
We are looking for a Consultant Ecologist to join our expanding ecology team, delivering high‑quality ecological fieldwork, assessments, and client‑facing support across a diverse range of projects. The role will be based at our Bath office.
Key Responsibilities
- Surveys & Fieldwork
- Assist with complex UK Habitat Classification surveys and condition assessments
- Lead simple UK Habitat Classification surveys
- Support habitat surveys including Hedgerow Regulations and NVC surveys
- Assist with protected species surveys (GCN, bats, reptiles, dormouse, birds, otter, water vole)
- Carry out ecological supervision, including watching briefs, toolbox talks, and Ecological Clerk of Works duties
- Ecological Assessment
- GIS mapping of habitats and ecological features
- Prepare Biodiversity Net Gain assessments using DEFRA metrics and similar tools
- Prepare survey reports, licence applications, and supporting documents
- Collate and interpret ecological desk study data
- Analyse species data, including bat call interpretation
- Assess development impacts and produce mitigation and monitoring recommendations
- Project Management
- Manage small‑scale projects
- Support Project Managers with client communications
- Assist with preparing quotes and commercial project processes
Skills, Knowledge & Expertise
- Minimum 3 years’ consultancy experience (including experience in most of the aforementioned tasks)
- Relevant degree or equivalent experience
- Eligible for Associate membership of CIEEM
- Strong organisational and analytical skills
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision
- Basic GIS knowledge
- Excellent communication and teamwork skills
- Enthusiasm and initiative for learning
- Hold a full UK driving licence

Benefits

- Ethos offers a discretionary 9‑day fortnight where staff receive every other Friday off

- TOIL and overtime
- Minimum of 4 days formal training per year (minimum 2 days external)
- Work related expenses paid, including mileage at ÂŁ0.45p
- Statutory Sick Pay and Maternity leave will apply in line with the most recent government guidance
- A contributory pension scheme is available to employees where up to 4% of salary can be paid in by employees which is matched as a salary addition by the employer
