Tech lead role where the job is agentic delivery and judgement, not out-coding the model.
The company
We're working with a B2B SaaS company in political and policy intelligence. Their platform tracks what happens across Westminster, the devolved nations and increasingly the EU, and tells the people who need to know. Around 20,000 users, mostly public affairs and government relations teams inside large banks, insurers, telcos and industrials.
Engineering is six people including the Director of Engineering: two full-time engineers, one QA, two contractors. Small team, PE money behind it, and a platform rebuild that's already started.
The role
The work is a platform rebuild: moving from tables of rows to one screen where a user asks anything about their business in politics and interrogates it, with LLMs synthesising and human analysts still in the loop. High-volume ingestion from government sources and the open web, relevance and sentiment layered on top, alerting whoever cares. Not a wrapper, not AI theatre, and uptime is the standing worry.
They're stack agnostic on hiring. They want someone who runs parallel streams of agent work and ships. A ticket that used to take two weeks should take a couple of hours, and while it runs you're on the next one. Releases are structured with a deliberately longer testing window, because code lands fast now.
What they're looking for
- You run several streams of agent work at once and have opinions on how to do it well. Tool choice is yours, the team uses Codex and Claude Code
- Their current frustration is "the design doesn't have a footer, do we want a footer?" They want someone who decides and moves
- Tickets come from product and you push back on them and get ahead of them, rather than moving them across the board
- A track record of solving problems, not just delivering tickets. Classic tech lead or principal engineer backgrounds fit, so do engineering managers who want to be hands-on again
- Comfortable in a six-person team where you're the most senior individual contributor
- Sector, university and company type are all irrelevant to them, and that's deliberate
- Hybrid: one or two days a week in the London office
- No on-call rota
The process
- Intro chat with the Director of Engineering and the CPO, 30 mins remote
- Pairing session on a real problem, remote. Not a coding test, AI tools expected and encouraged
- Final conversation, likely on-site in London
