Volunteer Opportunity: Law Student (2nd or 3rd Year Preferred) with an Interest in Consumer Law

Are you a law student passionate about consumer rights and ethical reform? EMCAT (Ethical Marketing Campaign for Addiction Treatment) is looking for a motivated volunteer to join our team and contribute to driving change in the addiction treatment industry.

About EMCAT

EMCAT is a campaign group dedicated to highlighting unethical practices in the addiction treatment sector, particularly around patient brokering. Our mission is to protect vulnerable individuals seeking addiction treatment by ensuring that their options are presented transparently, ethically, and without being driven solely by commercial interests.

What You’ll Do

  1. Report directly to our lawyer, working on legal strategies and consumer advocacy.
  2. Conduct legal research and explore avenues with regulators to address unethical practices.
  3. Contribute to drafting documents, analysing policies, and liaising with regulatory bodies.
  4. Play a key role in shaping our campaigns for industry reform and consumer protection.

What We’re Looking For

  1. Law students in their 2nd or 3rd year preferred, though postgraduate and 1st-year students are also welcome to apply.
  2. Strong research and writing skills, with an interest in consumer law, regulatory frameworks, or public advocacy.
  3. A self-motivated individual with a passion for justice and reform.
  4. Availability to commit 6–12 hours remotely per week.

What You’ll Gain

  1. Experience from a practising lawyer in a dynamic and emerging area of law.
  2. Hands-on experience working with regulators such as the CQC, HMRC, ASA, CMA, and others.
  3. A professional reference to support your career ambitions.
  4. The opportunity to make a real impact on the addiction treatment industry and consumer rights.

This is a volunteer position, but the experience and connections you’ll gain are invaluable for a career in consumer law, public advocacy, or policy reform.

If this sounds like the right opportunity for you, please email your CV and a brief cover letter to info@emcat.org.

Be part of EMCAT and help us create a more ethical and accountable industry.
