We are seeking a Credit Risk Governance & Controls Manager to join our UK Credit Risk organization led by UK Chief Risk Officer. Our mission is to deliver responsible, sustainable growth through data-driven, well-governed credit strategies. You will play a critical role in ensuring that our credit risk strategies across the card lifecycle meet UK regulatory expectations — FCA CONC, Consumer Duty, and affordability rules — to drive good customer outcomes and align with our enterprise risk framework.

In this role, you will own first-line governance for credit risk processes and controls for the UK market, ensuring they are compliant, effective, and future-ready. You will work closely with Compliance, Legal, Operational Risk, Enterprise Risk, and other partners to embed strong regulatory discipline and influence strategic decisions across the business.

This is an excellent opportunity for someone with deep regulatory knowledge of unsecured lending and hands-on experience strengthening governance and controls within a UK regulated institution.

Responsibilities:
  • Translate regulatory and enterprise expectations into practical first-line processes that enable compliant, customer-centric decision making.
  • Partner with Operational Risk and Compliance to strengthen monitoring routines, enhance oversight, and prevent recurrence of issues.
  • Manage Operational Risk Events end-to-end, driving timely escalation, thorough root-cause analysis, and sustainable remediation.
  • Support ongoing updates to Credit Risk policies, standards, and operating manuals, ensuring they remain current and aligned to regulatory expectations.
  • Prepare clear, high-quality documentation for audits, risk reviews, and regulatory assessments, ensuring strong evidence and timely responses.
  • Collaborate closely with Compliance, Legal, Data Governance, Product, and second-line functions to maintain alignment on regulatory and policy requirements.
  • Communicate complex regulatory or risk topics clearly and persuasively, tailoring messages for both technical and non-technical audiences.
Minimum Qualifications:
  • Strong working knowledge of UK consumer credit regulation, including FCA CONC, Consumer Duty, LSB standard, CCA etc.
  • Experience in a credit risk, operational risk, compliance, or governance role within a regulated financial services institution.
  • Proven ability to manage governance processes, control frameworks, or regulatory change initiatives.
  • Experience handling Operational Risk Events and coordinating cross-functional remediation work.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to influence across teams.
  • Strong organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.
  • A proactive, detail-oriented mindset with a commitment to robust governance and good customer outcomes.

Depending on factors such as business unit requirements, the nature of the position, cost and applicable laws, American Express may provide visa sponsorship for certain positions.

Benefits:
  • Competitive base salaries
  • Bonus incentives
  • Support for financial-well-being and retirement
  • Comprehensive medical, dental, vision, life insurance, and disability benefits (depending on location)
  • Flexible working model with hybrid, onsite or virtual arrangements depending on role and business need
  • Generous paid parental leave policies (depending on your location)
  • Free access to global on-site wellness centers staffed with nurses and doctors (depending on location)
  • Free and confidential counseling support through our Healthy Minds program
  • Career development and training opportunities

Offer of employment with American Express is conditioned upon the successful completion of a background verification check, subject to applicable laws and regulations.
