Esteem North Academy is seeking a flexible, committed, enthusiastic and highly skilled literacy Intervention Assistant to deliver phonics, literacy, oracy and reading interventions at one of our secondary sites in Chesterfield. The academy provides statutory education to children who are at risk of, or have been, permanently excluded. Pupils who attend the academy have challenging and often complex needs, and exhibit behaviours that prevent them from attending a mainstream school. A significant majority are weak readers with reading ages well below their chronological age.

Responsibilities

  • The successful candidate will identify pupils at KS3 and KS4 who require literacy interventions, deliver a variety of strategies and record and monitor progress and impact.
  • Pupils will be supported to develop their reading ability so that they can access the rest of their curriculum and be a functional member of society when they leave our academy.
  • You will be working predominantly with pupils on a 1:1 basis and must be able to build relationships.
  • You will be responsible for working with the Site Lead and Literacy Lead to develop our literacy programme and ensure that we have the required resources and books.
  • You will also support with staff CPD and a whole academy ethos of encouraging all opportunities for reading.
  • This can occur remotely.
  • The role will be based in Chesterfield and mileage claims are included for travel to other locations.
  • There may also be travel to our other academy sites for meetings, Inset and CPD or working with pupils in their homes or other off site locations.
  • You are required to have daily access to transport with business use included on your insurance.
  • You may be required to transport pupils in your own car.

Qualifications

  • Good knowledge and experience of Read Write Inc Fresh Start or another Phonics programme.
  • An affinity for pupils with behaviour, emotional and social difficulties.
  • Resilient, with high expectations and a sense of humour.
  • Ability to work predominantly 1:1 with pupils and build relationships.
  • Willingness to work with Site Lead and Literacy Lead to develop the literacy programme and ensure necessary resources.
