The Deputy Manager supports the Pre School Manager in the day-to-day running of the early years setting, ensuring high standards of care, education, safeguarding, and compliance with relevant regulations. The role involves leading staff, maintaining a stimulating learning environment, and promoting positive outcomes for all children.

Key Responsibilities

  • Leadership & Management
    • Support the Nursery Manager in the overall management of the setting
    • Act as Manager in their absence
    • Lead, motivate, and support staff to deliver high-quality childcare and education
    • Assist with staff supervision, appraisals, and performance management
    • Contribute to staff meetings, training, and development plans
  • Quality of Care & Education
    • Ensure the setting delivers a high-quality curriculum in line with the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS)
    • Support planning, observation, and assessment processes
    • Promote a safe, inclusive, and engaging environment for all children
    • Monitor and evaluate practice to maintain continuous improvement
  • Safeguarding & Welfare
    • Act as a Designated Safeguarding Lead (or support the DSL)
    • Ensure safeguarding policies and procedures are followed at all times
    • Promote children's health, safety, and wellbeing
    • Maintain accurate records and ensure confidentiality
  • Compliance & Administration
    • Support compliance with Ofsted requirements and other regulatory bodies
    • Assist with record-keeping, policies, and procedures
    • Help manage occupancy, staffing ratios, and rotas
    • Contribute to inspections and audits
    • Support with Recruitment and Selection, Induction training and Apprenticeship programme
  • Parent & Community Engagement
    • Build strong relationships with parents and carers
    • Support communication regarding children's development and wellbeing
    • Address queries or concerns professionally and promptly
    • Promote the setting within the local community

Person Specification

  • Level 3 qualification (or above) in Early Years / Childcare
  • Paediatric First Aid certification
  • Previous experience in an early year setting
  • Strong knowledge of the EYFS framework
  • Understanding of safeguarding and child protection procedures
  • Leadership or supervisory experience
  • Excellent communication and organisational skills
  • Level 5 qualification or working towards it
  • Experience supporting inspections (e.g., Ofsted)
  • L3 Designated Safeguarding Lead Training
