Based at Chelmsford, Essex Police Headquarters, this hands-on role offers a mix of fieldwork and office-based tasks. You’ll play a vital part in supporting our Officers and staff across Essex Police sites, with some occasional visits to Kent-based locations. We are offering two permanent opportunities to join our customer focused technical IT Field Operations team, working across a wide range of technologies and applications on Windows 10 and 11 Operating Systems.

You will gain wide exposure to the latest laptop and desktop hardware and software, Video Conferencing Solutions - supporting Police Officers, Staff and Volunteers across Essex. The current vacancies are to support all Essex Police sites across the county.

As a Field Operations Engineer, day to day duties will involve a significant amount of driving, attending Police Stations and other sites across the county to provide on-site, face to face IT support to Police Officers and Staff. Ensuring they have the necessary IT equipment to enable them to perform their duties. Therefore, a full valid manual UK driving licence is required for the role along with the ability to work both alone (remotely) as well as part of a team.

The role also entails providing support at our office drop-in repair centre, located at Essex Force Headquarters in Chelmsford Essex, as well as IT equipment moves and changes around the County, which involves manual handling of IT and video conferencing equipment. Supporting front line officers and staff is vitally important, so patience, tact and positivity is required, to put our operational officers at ease, and to be able to work through their technical requirements, installations and repairs.

We are looking for an adaptable, self-motivated, and enthusiastic person to join this hard-working Field Operations team. Ideally someone who has worked within an IT environment previously, however if you do not have this prior experience but do have a passion for IT, good at problem solving and have a logical mindset.

The ability to support Microsoft products is key for the role so any understanding or familiarity with these products would be beneficial, as well as an aptitude to learn appropriate technical skills quickly.

  • Effective communication skills, preferably gained within a customer service environment, as well as a good standard of English.
  • Your ability to work with others to effectively interact, cooperate, collaborate, and manage conflicts with other people to complete tasks and achieve shared goals.
  • Any evidence you may have utilising a diagnostic skillset and working through logical problems.
  • Any familiarity or working knowledge of Microsoft Windows 10 and 11 operating systems and Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, Teams, Outlook).
  • The ability to work within a fast paced, and pressurised environment as well as the ability to work remotely with tight timescales, prioritise your workloads and use own initiative.
  • Any basic awareness and understanding of Microsoft Active Directory and networking.
  • Any diagnostic and hardware skills regards AV (Video conference) equipment and printer / Multi-function Devices (MFD).
  • SharePoint and Office 365 awareness.
  • An understanding of the principles of Information Technology Infrastructure Library (ITIL) in a support services arena.

Standard Office hours are 08:00 – 16:00 Monday to Friday, however there may be occasions where you are asked to work outside of these core hours to meet operation requirements so some flexibility would be expected.
