Role Context

Kent and Essex Police have transformed their digital service to adapt and leverage the latest technology and infrastructure. An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Senior Digital Forensic Specialist within Kent and Essex Digital Services, based at Colchester Police Station. The Digital Services structure provides career progression and a CPD framework to support first‑class digital forensic investigations.

Digital devices and information communication technology are present in most investigations. These range from complex computer platforms to mobile phones, games consoles, digital CCTV systems and satellite navigation. As digital devices evolve, you will need to adapt and learn new technologies to meet the role requirements.

Responsibilities

  • supervise a team of digital forensic practitioners to ensure service delivery against published SLAs in support of investigations
  • ensure compliance with ISO standards and relevant legislation
  • provide advice and assistance to officers and staff concerning proportionate extraction of digital data
  • utilise streamlined, targeted extraction techniques or triage capabilities to enable faster charging decisions
  • understand and apply ISO 17025 requirements and develop/maintain competence under these standards
  • keep technical knowledge up to date with specialised digital forensic procedures and advancements
  • balance technical attributes with being a highly motivated team player capable of managing a high caseload
  • use coaching methods to create a supportive and constructive environment for colleagues
  • handle highly sensitive and distressing information with emotional resilience
  • work to tight deadlines and multi‑task to meet competing demands and court requirements

Qualifications and Skills

  • Technical ability across a range of digital devices, including knowledge of computer and/or mobile phone hardware, software, and operating systems
  • Educated to A level standard or at least 2 years\’ recent experience within a Digital Forensic service provider (law enforcement or private sector), including experience with leading digital forensic tools used nationally
  • Good understanding of ISO 17025
  • Interpersonal skills and the ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing

Role Details

The Senior Digital Forensic Specialist role is shift based, with a 6‑week pattern requiring 1 weekend in 6. Shifts are as follows:

  • AM shift: 07:00 – 15:00
  • PM shift: 12:00 – 20:00
  • Weekend shift: 08:00 – 16:00

Salary Notes and Additional Information
