Reporting to the Supervisor, the LGV Operative plays an important role in keeping our highway network safe, reliable, and well maintained for the communities we serve. As part of a dedicated team, you will carry out a variety of highway maintenance activities, helping to deliver a high‑quality service that supports the safe and efficient movement of people and goods across the county. All work will be undertaken in line with the strategies, policies, and standards set by the County Council and Essex Highways. We are looking for someone who takes pride in their work and enjoys being part of a team that makes a visible difference every day. Strong customer service, communication, and interpersonal skills are essential, as you will regularly interact with members of the public and colleagues. You will represent the Council on site, ensuring enquiries are handled in a professional, courteous, and helpful manner while helping customers understand the services and standards we provide.

The Role

  • Pothole repair and carriageway defect reinstatements.
  • Carriageway and footway patching and construction.
  • Drainage works, including laying pipes, resetting ironwork and gully/access chamber construction.
  • Installation of road signs and other small civil works.

About You

  • A current, valid driving licence is essential, with LGV Class 2 entitlement highly desirable.
  • New Roads and Streetworks or NHSS 12 training and qualifications would be highly beneficial.
  • Experience in the use of handheld technology (PDAs, Smartphones, etc) would be advantageous but not essential.
  • Local knowledge of the county would be beneficial.
  • Ability to build and maintain effective working relationships with customers both internally and externally.
  • Experience of working in the public eye or other customer‑facing roles would be advantageous.
