Social Worker / Senior Practitioner (Family Centres)

Role Overview

The Family Centres deliver interventions that bring positive change within families, support positive parenting, and increase children’s resilience. The role involves working with children and families in court arenas, completing court‑directed parenting assessments, and delivering group and bespoke direct work.

Responsibilities

  • Handle complex cases, seek management support and access supervision when required.
  • Provide professional guidance to colleagues and give feedback to the team manager.
  • Maintain an up‑to‑date record of activity on case files, produce reports, attend court and give verbal presentations.
  • Participate in case discussions, legal case discussions, Child Protection conferences, Statutory Reviews and other court proceedings.
  • Represent ECC in court proceedings and participate in quality assurance processes such as case file audits and diagnostic exercises.
  • Critically appraise own or others’ practice and challenge within identified forums.
  • Maintain current knowledge of legislation, policy changes, research findings and practice developments relevant to the role.
  • Take responsibility for professional development, including training and other development opportunities.
  • Act as a source of expert advice and consultation on professional issues relating to child protection situations, especially Section 47 investigations.
  • Ensure child protection plans are implemented and reviewed.
  • Chair team meetings and deputise for the Team Manager in day‑to‑day running and supervision of the team.
  • Carry out any additional duties that are commensurate with the grade.

Qualifications & Experience

  • A recognised social work qualification (Diploma, Degree or Master’s in social work, CQSW, CSS or equivalent) with current registration with Social Work England.
  • Evidence of continuing professional development aligned to relevant competency frameworks and knowledge statements.
  • Significant experience of social work, with an up‑to‑date understanding of relevant legislation, regulation and guidance.
  • Experience mentoring social work students and newly qualified staff, and being a subject matter expert in professional practice.
  • Experience chairing meetings involving clients, family members, carers or other multi‑agency professionals.
  • Proven ability to develop strong relationships with partners, other agencies and the local community.
  • Clear decision‑making skills that highlight and limit potential risks associated with interventions.

Additional Requirements

  • Ability to travel widely across Essex and beyond; a driving licence and access to a car are essential.
  • Requirement to register with the DBS update service if a DBS check is required; responsibility for maintaining the subscription.
