School Crossing Patrol Officer – St John’s Green Primary School, Colchester
Permanent, Part‑time position – approximately 7.5 hours per week. Hours are 45 minutes in the morning (08:00‑09:00) and 45 minutes in the afternoon (14:45‑15:45) across 39 weeks of the academic year. Pay is £13.00 per hour. Location: Colchester. Working style: operational field‑based worker.
Join Essex County Council’s School Crossing Patrol Team to support schools once in the morning and once in the afternoon, ensuring the safety of all pedestrians crossing the road to and from school and its surrounding areas. We are looking for a punctual, reliable, approachable individual who enjoys engaging with the public. Uniform, equipment and training will be provided.
Responsibilities
- Consider the needs of people with disabilities, especially those with mobility impairments, at the crossing point.
- Maintain regular contact with the schools served by the crossing.
- Assess risks associated with the crossing and identify problems; report defects to a supervisor.
- Assist with reports on accidents, failing‑to‑stop incidents and other events at the crossing.
- Keep all uniform and equipment in good condition and request replacements when needed.
- Give clear signals to drivers, ensuring traffic remains stopped until pedestrians have safely crossed.
