Overview
In this senior role, you will lead and deliver compliant building control services, guiding complex applications, inspections, enforcement, and appeals. You will mentor junior surveyors, drive continuous improvement, and provide expert advice to officers and Members. You work closely with cross-functional teams to ensure high standards and customer-focused outcomes. This is a pivotal position in Maldon District Council’s Building Control team, offering leadership, expert influence, and a chance to shape regulatory practice.

Responsibilities
- Manage complex building control applications, inspections, enforcement matters, and appeals as the senior technical point of contact
- Provide expert guidance to the Council, senior officers, Members, and external stakeholders on building control matters and strategic initiatives
- Oversee and mentor Building Control staff, promoting development, knowledge sharing, and high performance
- Contribute to policy, procedure, and project development to improve service quality and customer experience
- Ensure accurate records and data management in line with statutory requirements
- Monitor service performance and contribute to financial, strategic, and operational planning
- Act as a role model, promoting integrity, resilience, and a customer-focused, collaborative team culture
Key requirements
- Degree-level education in Building Surveying, Civil Engineering, Construction Management or equivalent experience
- Current RBI registration with the Building Safety Regulator (Class 2F)
- Chartered or accredited membership (RICS, CIOB, or CABE)
- Evidence of CPD in building control legislation, standards, and practice
- Extensive experience in building control including inspections, enforcement, and appeals
- Leadership experience in a regulatory environment and ability to manage teams
- Strong knowledge of Building Control legislation, health and safety, governance, and enforcement processes
- Proficiency with IT systems including Microsoft 365 and building control software
- Strong verbal and written communication
- Analytical and problem-solving skills
- Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment
