Overview
As a Principle Housing Lawyer, you will provide expert housing law advice and representation to the Council and partners, helping to manage legal risk and secure positive outcomes for the community. You will support the Housing & Property Directorate, ensure regulatory compliance, and contribute to policy and training. The role combines direct casework, advocacy in courts, and guidance to internal stakeholders on housing management. This hybrid, flexible environment offers opportunities to influence housing decisions, dispute resolution, and service delivery at scale.
Responsibilities
- Provide expert legal advice on housing matters (homelessness, allocations, tenancy management, disrepair, ASB, equality and human rights).
- Advise on policy development ensuring statutory compliance and best practice.
- Manage a varied caseload from instruction to conclusion, including advocacy in courts and tribunals.
- Draft legal documents (pleadings, statements, settlement agreements) and liaise with external counsel.
Key requirements
- qualified Solicitor, Barrister, Legal Executive or equivalent
- experienced advocate in Magistrates and County Court
- experience advising on evidence for proceedings or defense
- strong technical experience in non-contentious housing matters and contentious landlord and tenant matters
- experience managing a large caseload and achieving outcomes
- knowledge of pre-action protocols and Civil Procedure Rules
- knowledge of housing law applicable to social landlords and regulated housing
- awareness/experience of the Data Protection Act 2018
