Role Overview
Fixed Term, Full Time position as a Youth Work Team Leader – Hospital Project.
Working style: Community-based worker.
Responsibilities
The Youth Work Team Leader supports young people aged 11–19 (up to 25 with SEND) in Mid and South Essex Hospitals, providing individualised support, advocacy, and referral to community services.
Key activities include
- Working collaboratively within a team of youth workers to prioritise young people’s interests.
- Ensuring the voice of young people is heard in the design and delivery of youth provision.
- Supporting the development and delivery of the Hospital Project, including assessments, covering 3–4 hospital shifts a week in A&E, clinic visits, school clinics and home visits.
- Attending and contributing to team meetings and quarterly reports.
- Managing a defined caseload of young people to assess needs and deliver interventions.
- Maintaining accurate records in line with Df E guidance, external funders, and Information Sharing Protocols.
- Ensuring compliance with statutory requirements: Safeguarding legislation, GDPR, Equality and Diversity legislation, and handling concerns and complaints per Service policies.
- Working with NHS, CAMHS, Education, Social Care, SEND, Youth Offending Service, Housing, and partner agencies to remove barriers to access.
- Thinking creatively, challenging norms, and fostering continuous improvement.
- Assessing, managing, and mitigating risk, including Health and Safety and Business Continuity.
- Developing and delivering a programme for youth group sessions, ensuring participation and co‑authoring of the programme.
- Facilitating young people’s learning and understanding of personal and social development in accordance with core values of youth work.
- Maintaining professional relationships with young people in 1:1 settings across varied environments.
- Managing flexible working hours in line with project needs.
- Keeping efficient administrative systems and records on Youth Service systems.
- Providing information and data as required.
- Participating in the Service supervision and performance management scheme.
- Adhering to Child Protection/Safeguarding Guidelines and reporting concerns promptly.
- Ensuring health and safety responsibilities for staff and young people are met.
- Key Qualifications
- Nationally recognised JNC qualification in youth support work, minimum Level 3 (QCF, VRQ, NVQ or Local), with willingness to undertake a relevant level three qualification.
- Evidence of recent continuous professional development.
- Experience working with innovative social education programmes.
- Ability to develop work with young people to achieve planned outcomes.
- Experience of effective resource use.
- Experience of successfully involving young people in decision‑making processes.
- Knowledge and experience of youth work methods and techniques.
- Excellent numeracy and literacy skills (GCSE A–C or equivalent) and good IT proficiency.
- Mobile throughout an operational area; access to a vehicle is essential.
