School Crossing Patrol Officer – Copford Primary School

Permanent, Term Time

£13.46 per hour

Location: Colchester

Working Style: Operational field-based worker

Overview

The role involves supporting schools once in the morning and once in the afternoon, ensuring the safety of all pedestrians crossing the road to and from school and its surrounding locations. The position is for approximately 7.5 hours per week, with a holiday pay element included, and requires availability during the 39 weeks of the academic year (45 minutes between 08:00 – 09:00 in the morning and 45 minutes between 14:45 – 15:45 in the afternoon, depending on site requirements). Uniform, equipment and training will be provided.

Responsibilities

  • Consider the needs of people with disabilities, especially those with mobility impairments wishing to use the crossing point.
  • Maintain regular contact with the schools attended by children using the crossing.
  • Regularly assess the risks associated with operating at the crossing site, identify any problems and report problems and defects to the supervisor.
  • Assist in preparation of reports on accidents, failure to stop incidents and other incidents occurring at the crossing site.
  • Ensure that all uniform and equipment provided is maintained in good condition and request replacements when needed.
  • Give clear signals to drivers when stopping traffic, ensuring that the traffic remains at rest until the road at the crossing point is clear of pedestrians.

Qualifications and Requirements

  • Punctual, reliable, approachable and enjoys engaging with the public.
  • Available for 39 weeks of the academic year with the specified time windows.
  • Must possess a valid driving licence and access to a suitable vehicle or be able to meet the mobility requirements of the role through other means.
  • Ability to achieve and maintain a DBS check (including registration for the DBS update service). The candidate will be responsible for keeping the DBS certificate up to date.
  • Training will be provided as part of the role.
