Essex Trading Standards is seeking a highly motivated apprentice to support the delivery of regulatory functions within the Trading Standards service. The role is designed to develop the knowledge, skills and competencies required to become a Trading Standards Officer through a Level 6 Trading Standards Professional apprenticeship.

Accountabilities / Responsibilities

  • Manage own Level 6 TSP apprenticeship training and development, gaining and applying working knowledge of Trading Standards legislation.
  • Plan, deliver and manage enforcement projects, ensuring Trading Standards enforcement priorities are met, specifically relating to the Renters’ Rights Act 2026.
  • Lead investigations and enforcement activities, including carrying out PACE interviews, preparing notes, statements, and prosecution reports, and giving evidence in court in accordance with the Trading Standards Investigation Protocol.
  • Conduct visits to businesses to ensure compliance with legislation, provide advice and determine appropriate remedies for non‑compliance.
  • Liaise with members of the public and complainants to gather intelligence and provide updates on enquiries and complaints.
  • Review and evaluate intelligence using a threat matrix approach to optimise resource use.
  • Prepare consultancy service quotations, manage customer relationships and petty cash in line with Council financial policies.
  • Undertake enforcement activities independently or as part of a team (e.g., test purchasing of age‑restricted products, licensing inspections).
  • Accurately record work undertaken and prepare concise guidance letters to businesses and consumers.
  • Mentor and assist with training of Regulatory Compliance Officer Apprentices (Level 4).

Experience / Qualifications

  • Successfully completed Level 4 Regulatory Compliance Officer Apprenticeship.
  • Evidence of ability to develop skills and knowledge relevant to the role.
  • Good communication skills and ability to engage with a range of stakeholders.
  • Willingness to study and complete the Level 6 Trading Standards Professional Apprenticeship.
  • Proficient working knowledge of Microsoft Office applications.
  • Experience using bespoke databases or other IT applications.
  • Legal right to permanently live, work and study in the UK.
  • Driving licence and access to a vehicle (or ability to meet mobility requirements by other means).

Additional Requirements

  • As an apprentice, prior completion of a qualification at the same level or above in a related discipline is not permitted.
  • Apprentices may be required to register with the DBS update service if a DBS check is part of the role.
