Please note this is a fixed-base role. Whilst you will be contractually based in your preferred ACL office, the role allows for some home-working and a requirement to attend other ACL sites 2-3 days per week, in line with business need.

An exciting new opportunity for an experienced practitioner within the English for Speakers of Other Languages team at Adult Community Learning (ACL) Essex. Adult Community Learning (ACL) Essex is Essex County Council’s provider of lifelong learning experiences for Essex residents. ACL Essex offers qualifications to help people move nearer to, enter or progress within the workplace or gain skills to enhance life chances. The service focuses many of its programmes and activities on the hardest to reach communities within Essex. ACL Essex learners have access to a diverse range of accredited and non-accredited courses which encourage creativity, healthy lifestyles, social inclusion and engagement.

The Senior Trainer leads teaching and learning within a defined curriculum area, ensuring high-quality delivery that meets learner needs and complies with the Education Inspection Framework (EIF) and council priorities. The role supports curriculum planning, quality assurance and continuous improvement, and provides expert subject knowledge to shape provision and enhance learner outcomes. The postholder line manages trainers, promotes inclusive practice and digital innovation, and uses data insight to improve retention, achievement and progression, ensuring a consistently positive learner experience.

The post holder will have proven experience in delivering and improving high quality teaching and learning, and deep subject knowledge relevant to their curriculum area. They will demonstrate excellent management skills with the ability to mentor and develop trainers and uphold high standards of quality assurance and compliance. They will show inclusive, learner-centered behaviours, confidently use digital tools to enhance learning, and collaborate effectively with colleagues to support continuous improvement.

Role responsibilities:
  • Deliver high-quality teaching, learning and assessment within a defined curriculum area, ensuring compliance with the Education Inspection Framework (EIF) and service standards and supports positive learner outcomes.
  • Contribute to curriculum planning and development so that programmes are inclusive, accessible and aligned to learner needs, progression pathways and local labour market intelligence (LMI).
  • Use key performance indicators (KPIs), Management Information Systems (MIS) and learner voice to monitor attendance, progress and achievement, acting on insight to improve retention and success.
  • Support the Self-Assessment Report (SAR) and Quality Improvement Plan (QIP) processes by providing accurate data and evidence of impact ensuring continuous improvement actions are well-informed and demonstrate measurable impact.
  • Provide line management, mentoring and coaching to trainers to improve practice, embed digital tools and promote inclusive approaches to teaching and learning to support consistency of delivery across the curriculum area.
  • Ensure compliance with safeguarding, equality, diversity and inclusion (EDI) and health and safety requirements in all learning environments, promoting a safe learning culture.
  • Promote digital innovation and effective use of e-learning platforms to enhance learner engagement and outcomes.
  • Engage with employers and stakeholders where relevant to support curriculum relevance and learner progression opportunities.
Knowledge, Skills and Experience:
  • Educated to RQF Level 5 or above (or equivalent by experience) in a relevant subject or teaching discipline, with evidence of continuing professional development.
  • Teaching qualification such as Certificate in Education (CertEd), Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) or Diploma in Education and Training (DET).
  • Proven experience of delivering high-quality teaching and learning in adult education, Further Education (FE) or work-based learning contexts.
  • Knowledge of quality assurance processes and regulatory frameworks, including guidance from the Education and Skills Funding Agency (ESFA) and Education Inspection Framework (EIF).
  • Strong digital skills and ability to embed technology in teaching and learning to enhance engagement and outcomes.
  • Excellent communication, organisational and interpersonal skills, with the ability to mentor colleagues and promote inclusive practice.
