Kennel Assistant needed in Portsmouth, £14.67ph PAYE - Reference: 5295817. The Kennel Assistant will support the Senior Animal Warden with the day‑to‑day running of the stray dog kennel service in Portsmouth and work with partner organisations. They will ensure that the service fulfils the statutory responsibility for the collection of stray dogs throughout the city and meets the purpose of the kennels.

The Kennel Assistant will assist the Senior Animal Warden with investigating complaints relating to dangerous dogs and animal welfare matters and will work within the community to promote responsible dog ownership, which may include attendance of community events.

You will be responsible for the collection of strays within Portsmouth and the day‑to‑day care of the dogs within the kennels.

  • Maintain and clean kennels and paddocks, lifting and grooming dogs as required
  • Engage with owners, the public, councillors, police, partner agencies, charities and staff across Portsmouth City Council
  • Support community events promoting responsible dog ownership
  • Work independently and as part of a team, using initiative and judgement
  • Volunteer engagement and support in kennel environment
Qualifications & Skills
  • A recognised animal qualification is desirable but not essential.
  • Thorough knowledge of canines including behaviour, nutrition, enrichment, handling skills and recognition of illness and injuries (essential).
  • Experience working with dogs or in a similar environment (essential).
  • Basic knowledge of animal‐related legislation is desirable but not essential.
  • Effective communication skills at all levels from owners and members of the public to councillors, police, partner agencies, charities and staff.
  • Proactive approach and flexibility required.
  • Calm and tactful manner in engaging with customers and challenging behaviours when necessary.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team, using initiative and judgement.
  • Ability to implant microchips into dogs is desirable; untrained programme for microchipping training is essential.
  • Enthusiastic about working with volunteers and attending community events.
  • Comfortable using IT systems such as Word, Outlook, Excel; updating computerised records and taking payments daily.
  • Accurate note‑making of investigations for enforcement action.
  • Physical ability to manage daily tasks of cleaning kennels and paddocks, lifting dogs, grooming.
  • Full current driving licence (essential).
