We are delighted to invite applications for a Locum Consultant in Stroke Medicine to join our dedicated and forward‑thinking team at East Sussex Healthcare NHS Trust (ESHT). As part of ESHT’s clinical strategy, our Stroke Services have been consolidated to a single, purpose‑designed site at Eastbourne District General Hospital (EDGH), home to our Acute Stroke Centre. This centralised model ensures streamlined care and enhanced outcomes for our patients. You’ll be joining a collaborative and supportive multidisciplinary team committed to excellence in stroke care, innovation, and continuous improvement.
Our Stroke Services Include:
- Acute Stroke admissions managed at EDGH via Stroke and Thrombolysis pathways
- 24/7 Thrombectomy service in collaboration with our regional neuroscience centre
- TIA clinics held at both EDGH and Conquest Hospital, Hastings
- AI‑supported telemedicine for thrombolysis on‑call
- Two Community Stroke Rehabilitation Teams delivering Early Supported Discharge (ESD) Rehabilitation pathways to Bexhill Irvine Unit
- Active involvement in ongoing clinical research & opportunities to participate in national and international stroke trials
About You
We’re looking for an accredited physician with a strong background in Stroke Medicine. You must hold full GMC registration and be either on the Specialist Register or within six months of obtaining your CCT at the time of interview.
Key Responsibilities
- Emergency Care
- Attend thrombolysis and thrombectomy calls with the on‑call stroke team
- Coordinate thrombectomy referrals and patient transfers
- Conduct inpatient reviews, including ITU patients
- Acute Stroke Centre
- Manage hyperacute stroke admissions and associated complications
- Lead care planning and best‑interest meetings
- Communicate effectively with MDTs, patients, and families
- Outpatient Services
- Run TIA and Stroke clinics
- Conduct inpatient follow‑up reviews
- Manage associated administrative duties
- Out‑of‑Hours Commitment
- 1:4 weekends covering new admissions and TIA clinics
- 1:6 thrombolysis on‑call rota
