We are looking for an exceptional Senior Backend Engineer to take ownership of complex backend services, database systems, and key technical outcomes. In this role, you won't just be writing code—you’ll be driving architectural decisions, elevating engineering standards across the team, and mentoring the next generation of engineers. You will work closely with Product Managers and Owners to refine requirements, balancing functional features with resilience, performance, security, and cost-efficiency. If you thrive in an agile environment, value software craftsmanship, and enjoy moving platforms forward, we’d love to hear from you.
What You’ll Be Doing
- Architecture & Development: Design, build, test, and refactor complex, loosely coupled backend services and database systems in C#/.NET.
- Platform Modernisation: Support our ongoing architecture evolution, including migrating serverless workloads over to containerised services.
- Engineering Culture & Mentorship: Lead code reviews, mentor fellow engineers, and raise the bar for software development methods, security practices, and testing approaches.
- Product Collaboration: Work directly with Product Owners to shape acceptance criteria, focusing on real-world customer outcomes rather than code alone.
- DevOps & Quality: Build and improve CI/CD pipelines, manage observability (logging, metrics, monitoring), and partner with QA to ensure solid test coverage across the Agile pyramid.
- Pragmatic Design: Evaluate design trade-offs, manage technical debt responsibly, and build security into systems from day one.
What We’re Looking For
Essential:
- Core Tech Stack: Strong, proven expertise in designing and building backend services with C#/.NET.
- Distributed Systems: Experience building loosely coupled architectures using event-based or message queue patterns.
- Data & Cloud: Strong SQL skills (database design and query optimization) and experience operating services on a major cloud platform (we run exclusively on Azure, but equivalent AWS or GCP experience transfers smoothly).
- Testing & Quality: A firm discipline in unit and integration testing as an integral part of your workflow.
- Pragmatic AI Usage: Practical, day-to-day experience using AI coding assistants as part of your development process— with the critical mindset to review, adapt, or reject generated code.
- DevOps Mindset: Comfortable working in agile environments with Git and CI/CD pipelines.
- Communication & Leadership: Ability to explain complex technical concepts clearly to non-technical stakeholders, along with a track record of mentoring team members.
Desirable (Bonus points if you have):
- Experience with modern .NET versions (we are moving to .NET 10) and native Azure services.
- Experience with Infrastructure as Code (we use Bicep; Terraform experience is equally welcome).
- Familiarity with both serverless and containerised infrastructure.
- Full-stack capabilities or frontend experience with component frameworks like Angular.
- Experience with high-throughput transactional messaging (SMS, IP messaging).
- Experience leveraging AI tools beyond code generation (e.g., test generation, refactoring, documentation).
Competitive Salary: £65 - 75,000

A generous 27 days of annual leave in addition to Bank Holidays
