A digital legal/court reporter attends hearings either in person or remotely to record and take a log of the proceedings. eScribers, ISO9001 certified, provides services to courts, tribunals, inquests, regulatory bodies and other hearings and meetings. The role is with the eScribers (Limited) UK Group, primarily through eScribers Limited.

A Digital Reporter/Logger’s duties will include:

  • Transporting and setting up digital recording equipment both remotely and on location.
  • Managing the recording and logging of events in a professional and efficient manner, adhering to agreed timescales and seeking appropriate support when necessary.
  • Communicating effectively and appropriately with colleagues, clients and venue staff to meet eScribers’ contractual obligations to the highest standards.
  • Building relationships with clients and host venues to ensure smooth running of the event and facilitate the transfer of information for a quality transcript.
  • Possessing an understanding of court proceedings and basic legal terminology.
  • Providing a high level of customer service and support to all stakeholders.
  • Identifying and troubleshooting common issues.
  • Maintaining attention to detail and accuracy.

General Requirements:

  • Reside in the UK and be legally entitled to work.
  • Have a current UK bank account to receive payment.
  • Be reliable, with good time management and flexibility (proceedings can overrun).
  • Be a confident communicator (written & verbal).
  • Be smart and well presented.
  • Remain calm under pressure; possess intermediate technical IT/AV troubleshooting skills.
  • Be a confident Microsoft Windows and Word user.
  • Show knowledge and application of English grammar, spelling, punctuation and syntax.
  • Have good attention to detail and focus.
  • Work independently and as part of a team.
  • Maintain the highest level of confidentiality.
  • Have problem identification and resolution skills.
  • Have previous experience as a Digital Reporter/Logger (with some exceptions).
  • Be based in the London area with easy access to Central London; travel to other locations, including Belfast, Birmingham, Bristol, Cardiff and Manchester, including overnight stays, will be a bonus.

Other advantages:

  • Understanding of legal terminology.
  • Previous experience as a Digital Reporter/Logger – while not essential, it may improve suitability.
  • Ability to work in person (on location) and remotely (e.g., in a quiet room at home).

Basis of Engagement: Successful candidates will be offered a freelance contract and compensated on agreed rates. As an independent contractor, you will submit invoices for completed work and be paid via direct deposit. Work volume can fluctuate; priority is given to editors who maintain excellent quality standards.

Onboarding: Onboarding includes an initial aptitude test, telephone/MS Teams interview, submission of documentation, completion of the freelancer contract, computer setup, and a BPSS (including Criminal Records Check) – at the candidate’s expense. You will also be familiarised with eScribers equipment and software.
