Job Description: To ensure the smooth running of all SQL databases, data models and Power BI reports, working in an environment using Microsoft SQL Server, SSAS, SSIS, Power BI and MS Fabric. Your focus will be on SQL and its related technologies whilst also ensuring the smooth running and maximum uptime of ERM’s finance system (GMS). You will be covering the lead role within a small team providing round the clock support ensuring data availability for ERM’s key databases.

Responsibilities:

  • SME on supporting, maintaining, and enhancing our SQL, BI, and mid / back-end systems (including Finance systems, Data Analytics, and SQL dependent systems such as ERM’s bespoke H&S system).
  • Ensure maximum uptime for our database systems.
  • Ensure the Finance system is performing to acceptable levels and work with the Finance software vendor to tackle and resolve issues.
  • Ensure datasets from different sources are kept centralised and accessible.
  • Liaise closely with other IT functional managers.
  • Occasionally required to work out of hours (late nights / weekends).

Principal Accountabilities:

  • Working as an experienced engineer within programmes improving business delivery through technical excellence by performing a variety of project tasks.
  • Responsible for maintaining and developing the capability and competency of their team so that customer demands are met.
  • Through partnership and communication, work across ERM IT to create collaborative working relationships that demonstrably drives capability.
  • Recognised as an experienced engineer internally with colleagues.
  • To perform activities in a productive, timely and effective manner.
  • To maintain appropriate records of time spent, actions taken and item status to facilitate management, future problem resolution and to keep users informed of progress.
  • To keep users up to date with progress and to liaise with colleagues and partners in an appropriate manner.
  • To liaise with users regarding escalated issues and to agree appropriate courses of action and priorities.
  • To assist in other activities of the IT function as directed.

Knowledge, Skills and Experience:

  • 5+ years as a DBA.
  • Extensive knowledge of database query languages (SQL, MDX, DAX, M (Power Query), Postgres), database design, optimizing queries, internals knowledge of query planning.
  • Knowledge of working with SQL queries, stored procedures, functions and views.
  • Strong SQL/data manipulation skills required including cleaning and handling data.
  • Orchestration: Strong familiarity with SQL Server Agent and SSIS.
  • Designing database schemas.
  • Expertise in data modelling, both logical and physical.
  • Ability to create and maintain analytics data pipelines in Fabric, or using ADF or SSIS that generate data and insight to power business decision making.
  • Understanding of Fabric architecture including OneLake, Lakehouses, Warehouses, Pipelines, and Notebooks.
  • Scalability and performance: understanding how Fabric handles large datasets and optimizes compute.
  • Reporting and visualization: Power BI (Desktop and Service), Report Builder, SSRS.
  • Understanding of business intelligence best practices (i.e. dimensional modelling, ETL pipelines).
  • Experience working in a Regional or Global role.
  • Comfortable working in a service desk focused role.
  • Windows server knowledge (intermediate), networking (intermediate).
  • A degree in a related field is required or equivalent experience.
