About the Low Carbon Solutions Team
ERM’s Low Carbon Solutions (LCS) team includes over 100 experts in sustainable energy, working across areas such as energy networks, smart systems, low carbon buildings, transport, hydrogen, fuels, chemicals, energy policy, sustainability assessment, and innovation. Decarbonisation – Electricity Networks & Energy Systems
Energy networks — particularly electricity transmission and distribution — are critical to delivering Net Zero. Alongside this, energy systems thinking (spanning generation, networks, demand, and markets) is essential to ensure the system operates efficiently and reliably as it decarbonises. Delivering an energy system that is fit to meet the challenges of decarbonisation will require innovative technology, imaginative business models and robust policymaking.
ERM supports clients including electricity network operators, system operators, regulators, policymakers, developers and investors to shape and deliver this transition. We are seeking individuals with strong expertise in electricity networks and markets to join our growing team.
The Role
As a Managing Consultant, you will play a central role in delivering high-impact projects and supporting the growth of our electricity networks and energy systems offering.
You will:
- Lead the delivery of complex projects, managing small teams and ensuring high-quality outputs
- Provide strategic and technical advice to clients on electricity networks, markets, and decarbonisation
- Combine technical expertise with strong client engagement and commercial awareness
- Play an active role in business development, including shaping opportunities and winning work
This role is well suited to individuals who are comfortable taking ownership of project delivery, developing client relationships, and contributing to the continued growth of a high-performing team.
Key Responsibilities of this role include:
- Lead project delivery, managing small teams to produce high-quality, insight-led outputs across electricity networks, markets, and energy systems
- Engage clients effectively, acting as a trusted point of contact and communicating complex technical findings clearly to a range of stakeholders
- Drive business development, contributing to and leading proposals, identifying new opportunities, and supporting growth of client relationships
- Oversee technical analysis, including research, market assessment, and techno-economic modelling, ensuring rigour and consistency
Skills and Experience
You will need to demonstrate the following:
- Strong experience in the energy sector, with a focus on electricity networks and/or electricity markets (gained in consultancy, industry, or a regulatory environment)
- Demonstrated experience managing projects and leading small teams
- Proven track record of contributing to or leading work winning and business development activities
- Strong client-facing skills, including experience leading discussions and presenting to senior stakeholders
- Degree in a relevant discipline (e.g. engineering, physical sciences, economics)
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Clear commitment to sustainability and the energy transition
The following is advantageous but not essential:
- Experience with modelling tools and/or programming (e.g. Python)
- Electrical engineering background or experience with power system analysis tools
- Broader energy systems experience (e.g. hydrogen, heat, flexibility, whole-system analysis)
