This is an exciting time to join us as we strengthen our work with residents, landlords and partner organisations to ensure homes across the Borough are safe, healthy and fit to live in.

The role

As a Housing Standards Officer, your work will directly contribute to tackling the poor housing conditions that affect physical and mental health by driving improvements in residents’ homes and supporting healthier, safer communities.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Investigating complaints and undertaking property inspections
  • Inspecting and licensing Houses in Multiple Occupation (HMOs)
  • Identifying hazards using the Housing Health and Safety Rating System (HHSRS)
  • Preparing statutory notices, schedules of works and taking enforcement action
  • Working constructively with residents, landlords and colleagues to achieve positive outcomes

This is a varied and rewarding role where no two days are the same, offering the opportunity to apply your professional judgement while seeing the results of your work on the ground.

About you

You will bring solid experience and confidence in regulatory housing enforcement and inspections, together with a strong commitment to improving standards for residents. You will need:

  • Experience of housing enforcement, including HMO licensing.
  • A Certificate of Competence in applying HHSRS and practical experience in applying this.
  • An honours degree (2:2 or above) in Building and Construction, Construction Management, Surveying or a related discipline or equivalent qualification/experience, or an HND with at least three years’ relevant experience, or qualified Environmental Health Practitioner status (CEnvH) with housing experience.
