We have an excellent opportunity for an experienced MOT Tester / Mechanic at the Waste and Environmental Operations in Blackpool.

About the company
Our client is a wholly owned company of the Council, providing Environmental Operations which include Waste collection, Street cleaning, grounds and Park maintenance.

About the role
As a MOT Tester / Mechanic you will carry out the routine repair, inspections and maintenance for all Vehicle types, prepare all Vehicle types for MOT, repair and maintain trade specific or specialised power tools, plant and equipment and your responsibilities will include:

  • Resolving straightforward problems and modify work daily to suit without waiting for instruction
  • Ensure issues that have been identified with vehicles, HGV’s are, where applicable, repaired ready for use without reference to supervisor, to DVSA standards
  • Repair and maintain any fleet of plant, agriculture and horticulture units to the HSE, industry and company standards
  • Use diagnostic equipment, practical skills and experience to identify problems and repair vehicles, plant and other equipment by agreed timescale
  • Solutions to more complex problems to be referred to supervisor e.g. those with wider implications, cost, etc
  • Ensure the enforcement of taxi vehicle license requirements are met to avoid the risk of the public being hurt in unsafe and dangerous vehicles
  • Prepare vehicles for MOT tests and Insurance inspections
  • Carry out MOT’s appropriately
  • Ensure HGV MOT’s are carried out to the required standard
  • Wear protective clothing (PPE) when required
  • Attend roadside break downs (lone working)
  • About you
    To be successful for the role of MOT Tester / Mechanic you must be / have:

  • NVQ3 / City & Guilds level 2 and 3 or equivalent (including specific techniques e.g. welding, computer diagnostics)
  • MOT testing certificate, MOT Class 4 and 7
  • Category B Driving Licence
  • Competent mechanic with significant experience and use of own tools
  • Knowledge of working in a workshop environment and the associated materials to be used
  • Knowledge of road traffic legislation and safety requirements for the relevant fleet
  • Knowledge of vehicles and equipment to include their operation e.g. all fleet, private MOT customers, taxis etc
  • Understanding of DVSA test specification for HGV’s
  • Able to calculate correct resources which will include the design, manufacture and production of bespoke solutions e.g. fabrication
  • Able to complete all records and workshop paperwork correctly and promptly
  • Knowledge of Health and safety regulations, practices and procedures
  • Desirable skills

  • MOT testing certificate, MOT Class 5
  • Taxi testing and enforcement certification
  • HGV Category C Licence
  • Ability to drive all relevant vehicles and use equipment which may include, HGV, forklift, grass cutting machinery, plant, wheelchair lifts, shovel loading, HI-AB Versalifts (cherry pickers) etc
  • About the hours & rewards
    In the role of MOT Tester / Mechanic, you will work Monday to Friday 39 hours per week and there is an excellent salary on offer of £28,380 per annum.
