About the role
This is a junior, hands-on bookkeeping role supporting the day-to-day processing of client financial information across a varied portfolio of SME clients. You will work closely with the accounting team to process receipts and source documents, organise client information, and use systems such as Hubdoc and Xero to keep records accurate and ready for the accountants to work from. The role is designed for someone accurate, organised and with some practical bookkeeping exposure who wants to develop their skills over time. You will begin with routine bookkeeping and administrative processing tasks, with the opportunity to take on broader bookkeeping responsibilities as your knowledge and confidence grow.
What you'll be doing
- Processing day-to-day bookkeeping information for clients
- Handling receipts, invoices and other source documents
- Organising and preparing client information for the accounting team
- Uploading and processing documents through Hubdoc
- Reviewing and approving information in Hubdoc before sending it through to Xero
- Maintaining accurate and well-organised client records
- Carrying out general bookkeeping-related data processing
- Identifying missing information or obvious discrepancies and escalating these to the appropriate team member
- Working closely with accountants to ensure they have the information needed to complete client work
- Supporting general administrative and practice tasks where required
- Learning and taking on broader bookkeeping responsibilities as skills develop
Essential requirements
- 1-2 years of practical bookkeeping experience or demonstrable hands-on bookkeeping exposure
- Comfort with basic bookkeeping and financial data-processing tasks
- Good organisation skills and the ability to keep records and source documents in order
- Comfort supporting both bookkeeping and administrative / processing tasks
- Willingness to learn and develop bookkeeping skills over time
- Strong attention to detail and a high level of accuracy
- Good written and verbal communication skills
- Confidence communicating directly with clients
- The ability to manage multiple deadlines and prioritise your workload
- A proactive and reliable approach to work
- The ability to work independently without requiring constant supervision
- A positive, team-focused approach
Desirable requirements
- Experience using Xero
- Experience using Hubdoc or similar receipt / document-processing software
- Experience working within an accountancy practice or supporting SME clients
- Previous administrative or finance-processing experience
- Currently studying towards, or interested in progressing through, a bookkeeping or accounting qualification
- Experience with cloud bookkeeping migrations
Formal qualifications are not mandatory. We are open to applicants who are currently studying bookkeeping, are at an early stage of a bookkeeping qualification, or can demonstrate practical ability and a genuine interest in developing their skills.

Working pattern and location
This is a full-time, permanent, in-person position based in Durham DH1 5HL. You will be required to work from the office five days per week and must be able to commute to Durham DH1 5HL reliably each working day. Normal working hours: 37.5 hours per week, Monday to Friday. Please note that hybrid and remote working are not available for this position.
