The Role – Day-to-Day Duties

  • As Caretaker, you will be responsible for the general maintenance, security, and appearance of the school premises. Duties will include:
  • Opening and closing the site, including key-holding responsibilities
  • Ensuring the safety and security of the buildings and grounds at all times
  • Carrying out routine maintenance, repairs, and basic DIY tasks
  • Monitoring the condition of the site and reporting any issues or defects
  • Managing heating, lighting, and alarm systems
  • Supporting health and safety compliance across the site
  • Setting up rooms for school activities, events, and meetings
  • Managing deliveries and liaising with contractors where required
  • Ensuring outdoor areas are safe, clean, and well maintained
  • Responding promptly to day-to-day issues as they arise

Person Specification

  • Previous experience working as a caretaker, site supervisor, or premises officer
  • Good practical maintenance and DIY skills
  • A strong understanding of health and safety procedures
  • Reliable, trustworthy, and able to work independently
  • Good communication skills and a professional approach
  • Physically fit and able to carry out manual tasks
  • Willingness to be flexible to meet the needs of the site

Desirable

  • Previous experience working within a school or educational setting
  • Experience supervising contractors
  • Basic knowledge of COSHH, fire safety, or site compliance
  • Ability to respond to out-of-hours issues when required
