The Role – Day-to-Day Duties
- As Caretaker, you will be responsible for the general maintenance, security, and appearance of the school premises. Duties will include:
- Opening and closing the site, including key-holding responsibilities
- Ensuring the safety and security of the buildings and grounds at all times
- Carrying out routine maintenance, repairs, and basic DIY tasks
- Monitoring the condition of the site and reporting any issues or defects
- Managing heating, lighting, and alarm systems
- Supporting health and safety compliance across the site
- Setting up rooms for school activities, events, and meetings
- Managing deliveries and liaising with contractors where required
- Ensuring outdoor areas are safe, clean, and well maintained
- Responding promptly to day-to-day issues as they arise
Person Specification
- Previous experience working as a caretaker, site supervisor, or premises officer
- Good practical maintenance and DIY skills
- A strong understanding of health and safety procedures
- Reliable, trustworthy, and able to work independently
- Good communication skills and a professional approach
- Physically fit and able to carry out manual tasks
- Willingness to be flexible to meet the needs of the site
Desirable
- Previous experience working within a school or educational setting
- Experience supervising contractors
- Basic knowledge of COSHH, fire safety, or site compliance
- Ability to respond to out-of-hours issues when required
