The Opportunity of the Finance Manager
This is a highly visible role that touches every part of the business. You’ll work closely with directors and department heads, providing insight, control, and support across all financial operations.
Key Responsibilities of the Finance Manager
- Full financial operations including accounting, reporting, payroll, and tax compliance (CIS, VAT including reverse charge and PVA), and HMRC submissions
- Purchase and sales ledgers across a high-volume environment
- Subcontractor payments and monthly CIS returns
- Payroll for 50+ employees, including pensions and statutory requirements
- Monthly management accounts, including P&L, accruals, and forecasting
- Credit control and cash flow management
- Fixed asset register and depreciation
- Financial reporting and analysis to support strategic decision-making
- Preparation for year-end audit and liaison with external auditors
- Data reporting for regulatory bodies (e.g., ONS)
About you, the Finance Manager
They’re looking for someone who is not just technically strong, but also proactive, organised, and confident working across a busy, multi-functional business. You will have:
- Proven experience as a Finance Manager or Management Accountant within the construction sector
- Strong knowledge of CIS, VAT (including reverse charge), and HMRC compliance
- Experience using Sage 50, Sage Payroll, and advanced Excel skills
- Excellent attention to detail and ability to manage multiple priorities
- Strong communication skills, with the ability to explain financial concepts to non-finance colleagues
- A problem-solving mindset and a natural curiosity when things don’t add up
- Professional qualification (ACCA, CIMA, or equivalent) desirable, or substantial relevant experience
