The Role

We are currently seeking an experienced Project Clerk of Works to oversee a range of refurbishment and lifecycle projects across multiple educational sites.

The successful candidate will monitor site activities, ensure works are delivered safely and in accordance with specifications, and support the Project Manager by maintaining quality standards, managing contractor compliance, and monitoring project progress.

Key Responsibilities

  • Monitor and supervise construction activities to ensure compliance with specifications, drawings and quality standards.
  • Inspect workmanship and materials, identifying defects or non-compliance where necessary.
  • Report quality issues, delays or site concerns to the Project Manager.
  • Ensure contractors comply with Health & Safety procedures, Permit to Work requirements and approved RAMS.
  • Review contractor documentation, including Method Statements, Risk Assessments, COSHH assessments, insurance and competency records before works commence.
  • Administer and monitor the Permit to Work process.
  • Maintain accurate daily site records, inspection logs and project documentation.
  • Monitor progress against programme and escalate delays or risks.
  • Attend site meetings and provide updates on construction progress.
  • Carry out snagging inspections and support practical completion and handover activities.
  • Liaise with contractors, client representatives and the wider project team.
  • Ensure all works are carried out in accordance with company procedures and relevant legislation.

Essential Requirements

  • Enhanced DBS Certificate.
  • Previous experience as a Clerk of Works, Site Supervisor, Site Manager or similar construction supervision role.
  • Experience overseeing construction, refurbishment or lifecycle projects.
  • Good understanding of Health & Safety legislation and CDM Regulations 2015.
  • Experience managing Permit to Work systems and reviewing contractor RAMS.
  • Strong organisational and communication skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple workstreams simultaneously.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office.
  • SMSTS or SSSTS qualification (or equivalent).
  • First Aid at Work Certificate.
  • Good knowledge of construction methods, building services and MEP installations.
  • Ability to work flexibly, including occasional out-of-hours working where required.

Desirable Skills

  • Clerk of Works qualification through ICWCI or CIOB.
  • Experience working within PFI or PPP environments.
  • Previous experience delivering projects within education, healthcare or other live operational environments.
  • IOSH Managing Safely or NEBOSH General Certificate.
  • Experience carrying out quality inspections and snagging.
  • Ability to read and interpret construction drawings and specifications.
