Apprentice Highway Operative within our Connected Cities business supporting our projects in Chester and the surrounding area.
General Overview
To work and train under supervision and to achieve an apprenticeship in Highways Maintenance Skilled Operative L2.
- Key activities
- Installation & Maintenance Support
- Assist Column installation crews on new installations and replacements
- Assist qualified electricians in the installation, repair, and maintenance of street lighting assets, including columns, lanterns, cabling, and control equipment.
- Support fault-finding activities and carry out basic electrical checks under supervision.
- Safety Compliance
- Follow all safety policies, risk assessments, and method statements when working on highways and electrical systems.
- Use PPE correctly and promptly report hazards, near misses, or unsafe conditions.
- Learning & Development
- Successfully complete all apprenticeship training, coursework, and on-the-job assessments within required timescales.
- Actively seek to increase knowledge of electrical principles, lighting technologies, and industry standards.
- Worksite Preparation & Support
- Prepare tools, equipment, and materials needed for site tasks.
- Maintain clean, safe, and organised work areas and vehicles.
- Record Keeping
- Assist with accurate recording of work completed, materials used, and asset information using handheld devices or job sheets.
- Customer & Public Interaction
- Behave professionally when interacting with the public, colleagues, or contractors on site.
- Represent the organisation positively, ensuring minimal disruption to road users and communities.
- Quality & Standards
- Carry out tasks to the required technical and quality standards under the direction of a supervisor or qualified electrician.
- Report defects, asset issues, or installation concerns promptly.
Skills, Qualifications & Experience
- GCSEs (or equivalent) in Maths, English, and Science – Grade 4/C or above.
- Willingness to work toward the NVQ Level 2 in Highway Electrical Systems apprenticeship standard.
- Willingness to obtain an ECS Apprentice Card.
- Full UK driving licence or working toward obtaining one
- No prior industry experience required — full training will be provided.
- Demonstrated interest in electrical work, engineering, or practical hands-on tasks
