EQUANS is looking for a Lead Fire Engineer to join our team in Birmingham or London on a permanent basis. This is a full-time role working Monday to Friday. On offer is a competitive salary and benefits package.
The Lead Fire Engineer is a senior technical leader responsible for developing and delivering robust fire safety strategies across regeneration, retrofit, and new-build projects. This potentially includes complex occupied refurbishments and high-rise residential schemes. The role provides strategic guidance, technical assurance, and regulatory compliance, ensuring fire safety is integrated into sustainable design and digital workflows.
What will you deliver?
- Fire Safety Design, Strategy and Engineering Leadership
- Coordinate/ develop fire strategies compliant with UK Building Regulations, BS 9999, BS 7974.
- Lead fire risk assessments, smoke and egress modelling, and structural fire resistance analysis.
- Provide guidance on passive and active fire protection systems.
- Integrate fire safety into MMC and low-carbon design solutions.
- Ensure BIM integration for fire safety elements and accurate digital records.
- Collaborate with architectural, structural, and MEP teams to embed fire safety into coordinated design solutions.
Project Delivery and Risk Management
- Review and approve fire-related design documentation, specifications, and contractor submittals.
- Oversee effective fire safety implementation during construction and commissioning.
- Provide technical oversight during construction, ensuring fire safety measures are correctly implemented and tested.
- Support post-occupancy fire safety reviews and contribute to building safety management strategies/ continuous improvement.
Innovation, Knowledge Leadership and Work Winning
- Champion innovation in fire engineering, including digital fire modelling, performance-based design, and sustainable fire safety solutions.
- Stay abreast of evolving fire safety legislation, research, and best practices.
- Support work winning activities and collaborate with bid teams to develop compelling fire engineering narratives and value propositions.
- Participate in client engagement sessions, presentations, and interviews to articulate fire safety strategies and capabilities.

Who are we looking for?
Experience and Qualifications:
- Chartered Engineer (CEng) with IFE or equivalent.
- Degree in Fire Engineering or related discipline.
- Additional qualifications or certifications in fire risk assessment, fire modelling, or building safety (e.g. NEBOSH Fire Safety, CFPA Europe) are desirable.
- At least 10 years of experience in fire engineering, including involvement with complex projects or equivalent relevant experience.
- Experience in regulatory engagement and work winning.
