EQUANS are looking for a Mobile Technical Operative (Multiskilled) covering the Newcastle Combined Courts for our HMCTS contract. This role would be a permanent full‑time role working 40 hours per week. On offer is a competitive salary and benefits package.
General Overview
The primary purpose of the role is to carry out both planned and reactive maintenance on a wide variety of Mechanical and Electrical Buildings Services Engineering plant, ensuring all activities are completed in a safe and timely manner and in accordance with the contracted output specifications and EQUANS processes and procedures. This includes Legionella control and monitoring activities. Basic plumbing skills would also be part of the role.
Key Responsibilities
- Ensure routine PPM is carried out to all mechanical and electrical plant in accordance with Site task schedules and CAFM.
- Ensure reactive tasks throughout the sites are completed and be proactive in highlighting areas where improvements can be made.
- Ensure plant faults and defects are always swiftly remedied to maintain plant in serviceable order.
- Ensure suitable spares are available to carry out both maintenance and reactive works; provide parts lists and estimated timescales.
- Ensure all relevant paperwork/CAFM is completed regarding PPM, reactive and breakdown works and that it is passed without delay to the contract administrator.
- Ensure Method Statements and Risk Assessments are always prepared for all tasks undertaken to ensure safe working practices.
- Develop a good working relationship with all members of EQUANS staff, subcontractors and the client representatives.
- Provide a Safe and Healthy working environment, wearing uniform and PPE at all times.
- Present a professional image of EQUANS to clients at all times.
- Maintain up to date plant logs and keep plant rooms clean and tidy.
- Arrange and provide holiday and sickness cover at short notice and be flexible in working patterns.
- Undertake lone working when required, subject to passing satisfactory training.
- Action and complete assigned tasks as appropriate.
- Maintain awareness and compliance to the contractual KPIs/SLA's.
- Ensure CAFM system (e.g. Maximo) is kept up to date and that PPM and reactive tickets are closed out with accurate data captured.
- Operate a Permit to Work System in accordance with EQUANS Technical and SHEQ processes and client requirements.
- Carry out any other task as directed by the account management team.
Client / Customer Interaction
- Respond in a timely manner to verbal and written requests.
- Coordinate quotations with the contract manager.
- Produce information for quotations.
Helpdesk – PPM Support
- Support the Helpdesk when reporting or updating planned and reactive maintenance.
- Be available for out of hours call‑out support for the contract.
Compliance Requirements
- Gain Technical Appointments as required (e.g. LVCP/LVAP/Mechanical/Pressure CP).
- Produce Condition/Dilapidation Reports as required.
- Inform supervisor immediately if dangerous circumstances occur.
SHEQ
- Comply with requests for information from the SHEQ manager.
- Work to company health and safety policy.
- Ensure PPE is safe to use; report accidents and near misses promptly.
- Ensure test equipment is within calibration.
- Follow Method Statements & Risk Assessments for all works.
Impact

- Fault finding, minor repairs and installation alongside general maintenance services.
- Ensure specialist subcontractor service visits are completed efficiently and quality of work inspected.
- Support other engineers and operatives; liaise with direct and indirect staff.
- Join wider team and undertake full FM maintenance activities when required.
- Assist in preparation of company reports, worksheets and support service level agreements.
- Carry out duties within company safety policy; advise line manager of any safety concerns.
- Possess excellent communication skills; work unsupervised when needed; complete statutory paperwork.
- Use smartphone technology for helpdesk support and specialist tools.
- Report risks, near misses, incidents to the management/SHEQ team immediately.
- Risk assess each job upon arrival on a site‑specific basis.
- Use appropriate safety equipment and clothing for all works.
- Ensure public protection measures are adhered to.
Qualifications or Required Experience
- Approximately 5 years of relevant experience as a Mechanical Engineer within an FM environment.
- City & Guilds Mechanical Engineering Services NVQ Level 2 or higher.
- Excellent communication skills and ability to deal with all levels of staff.
- Proactive in achieving the highest standard of operation.
- Good IT and report‑writing skills.
- Ability to work under pressure whilst remaining calm, clear‑thinking and deliver required services within time constraints.
- High level of initiative with a drive to continuously improve the operation.
- Advanced communication skills with full understanding of customer needs and expectations.
- Ability to comprehend and act upon both verbal and written instructions.
- Enthusiasm and demonstration of pro‑activity, diligence and alertness; willingness to participate in internal training programmes.
- Integrity, honesty and punctuality.
- Current and valid full & clean UK driving licence.
