EQUANS are looking for a Maintenance Engineer working on our Barnsley Schools contract. This role would be a permanent full‑time role working 37.5 hours per week (Mon‑Fri 9 am‑5 pm). On offer is a competitive salary of £30,000‑£32,000 and benefits package.

General Overview

We are looking for a driven individual to add expertise and dimension to the building maintenance teams at the Barnsley Schools contract. They will deliver planned, reactive, and preventive maintenance across a portfolio of 13 primary schools within a PFI contract. The Maintenance Engineer ensures buildings remain safe, operational, and compliant, supporting a high‑quality learning environment for staff and students. This includes carrying out mechanical, electrical, and fabric maintenance, responding to breakdowns, and contributing to statutory compliance.

Impact

The Maintenance Engineer will work within a team to deliver planned and reactive maintenance across 13 Primary Schools and will report into the Technical Supervisor. They will minimise penalty deductions by responding in a timely manner to all maintenance issues in accordance with the Service Level Agreements. They must be reliable and professional, providing technical guidance and expertise to help shape and drive the maintenance/lifecycle requirements of the site.

Complexity

  • Carry out scheduled maintenance tasks in accordance with the PFI contract requirements.
  • Carry out reactive maintenance, repairs, testing and inspection of building mechanical, plumbing and fabric services as required.
  • Have an understanding of the operational procedures and safe working practices of major items of plant and systems, such as LTHW boilers and associated systems, heating and domestic water services, ventilation plant and associated systems, low voltage electrical distribution systems, fire alarm systems, door access systems, lift equipment, pressure systems.
  • Ensure all PPM activities are recorded accurately in CAFM systems.
  • Utilise PDA to close out jobs with SLA rectification time with accurate data captured.
  • Respond to breakdowns, faults, and call‑outs in a timely manner, ensuring minimal disruption to school operations.
  • Diagnose and repair faults across electrical, mechanical, and building fabric systems.
  • Escalate issues requiring specialist intervention where required.
  • Ensure risk assessments are completed and maintained for all tasks and all activities are undertaken within EQUANS Safe Systems of Work.
  • Ensure all business specific SHEQ obligations are met and procedures are adhered to.
  • Maintain a safe and tidy working area.
  • Safely operate all types of access equipment, hand and power tools in accordance with health and safety and manufacturers guidelines.
  • Ensure all works meet PFI contractual compliance and performance standards (SLAs and KPIs).
  • Build positive working relationships with school staff, contract managers, and external partners.
  • Communicate clearly about works being undertaken, timescales, and potential impacts.
  • Represent the FM team professionally within the school environment.
  • Complete work orders, service sheets, and compliance documents accurately and on time.
  • Update asset histories and maintenance records in the CAFM system.
  • Report any health and safety concerns, building defects, or contract risks.
  • Support small project works or lifecycle replacement activities.
  • Participate in an on‑call rota.
  • Ensure tools, vehicles, and equipment are maintained and used safely.
  • Assist with the management and control of contractors.

Essential Qualifications

A full driving licence is essential for this role. Recognised Apprenticeship in relevant craft, discipline to City and Guilds level.

Desirable Experience

  • First Aid at Work.
  • Previously worked within a maintenance environment.
  • Previous experience of working in a PFI Environment.
  • Legionella Awareness.
  • IOSH Working Safely or similar.
  • Enhanced DBS.
