Equans is looking for an Assistant Commercial Manager to join the team in Birmingham on a permanent basis.

This is a full-time role working 37.5 hours per week.

This role is based on a portfolio of hospital contracts in Birmingham.

The contract comprises the new 670 bed Midland Metropolitan Hospital due to open in Spring 2024 and a retained hospital estate covering Birmingham City Hospital, Sandwell General Hospital, Rowley Regis Hospital and Leasowes Intermediate Care Centre.

This role will be focused on providing commercial support to the retained estate covering day to day services and lifecycle activity.

The role will also develop to cover delivery of projects on both MMUH and the retained estate.

The contract has a dedicated Commercial Manager in post, to whom this role will report.

The Assistant Commercial Manager will provide contract commercial management and profit improvement, assist in management of WIP and debt, manage commercial processes for rechargeable costs and focus on compliance around contract delivery and reporting.

This job description is not exhaustive and may expand to cover additional or different sites as the role develops.

In addition, the role may be required to support new business development initiatives from time to time to extend the suite of contracts in the region.

The Assistant Commercial Manager will manage numerous stakeholder relationships, including external relationships with clients, suppliers and internal BU leadership and functions.

They will hold collective responsibility with the Commercial Manager and the contract management team to improve operations and deliver against financial plans.

The role is based on hybrid working with some attendance on site at the contract required, with the remainder either based in a local Equans site office or home working, based on individual preference.

Limited general travel will be required to attend team meetings and other events.

What will you deliver?

  • Identifying and driving risk and opportunity management
  • Supporting WIP and debt recovery for rechargeable costs
  • Managing contract commercial processes
  • Improvement in financial performance of the contract through continuous improvement
  • Management of variation/change control to capture revenue
  • Leading governance within the contracts to ensure that the requirements of the contract and Equans’s own internal governance processes are being complied with
  • Aiding the quality of service by ensuring awareness of contractual responsibilities among all other Equans colleagues (including contract deliverables, scope of services etc)
  • Enforcing commercial compliance (by audit and support against Equans’ minimum Commercial Standards)
  • Being professional and equitable negotiators and dispute resolvers but ultimately
  • Rebutting unfounded contractual claims
  • Taking a key role in the management of contractual claims / disputes with clients and other third-parties
  • Production of claims to any potential contentious contractual issue that may arise
  • Work closely with finance to understand margin realised from projects
  • The requirement to ensure full commercial governance to all subcontractors
  • To provide day to day commercial support to the account management teams

Who are we looking for?

  • Suitable commercial experience, ideally within the Facilities Management Sector
  • Educated to degree/ diploma level in either Law, Business, Surveying (Building/Quantity), or the Built Environment (FM, Land)
  • Understanding and practical application of base UK law applicable to Commercial Management (e. g. Construction Act etc)
  • Ideally a member or training to be member of a chartered institution
  • Excellent financial acumen with an ability to analyse complex data and documentation with accuracy
  • Skilled negotiator with proven experience in a commercial environment
  • Sound understanding of risk analysis/management
  • Thorough knowledge and experience of Business Assurance systems
