Equans is a renowned energies & services contractor and a proud member of the Bouygues global industrial group. We have an exciting opportunity for a Mechanical Design Engineer interested in the development of renewable heat and thermal energy efficiency projects.

Role Focus

This role will focus on the engineering and design development of commercial heat pump applications, HVAC systems improvements and controls, working alongside electrical energy engineers and analysts to deliver low‑carbon retrofit solutions.

Key Activities

  • Prepare design models using AutoCAD, REVIT, Navisworks and proprietary software.
  • Prepare thermal energy simulation models with IES VE, Hysopt and EnergyPRO.
  • Perform calculations and engineering analysis to validate simulation models and confirm system design requirements and performance.
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary design teams, including electrical, structural, civil, architectural and energy specialists.
  • Support market research to identify new technologies and design innovations, assess suitability for projects.
  • Assist in technical options appraisals to qualify and quantify best available techniques.
  • Prepare design and functional specifications and contribute to tender scopes.
  • Lead or contribute to design stage reports and other customer‑facing documents.
  • Undertake risk assessments to identify and minimise health, safety and environmental risks associated with designs.
  • Ensure designs comply with statutory, regulatory and contractual requirements.
  • Account for physical and environmental constraints in design outputs.
  • Work with BIM specialists to provide relevant modelling and design information.
  • Undertake non‑invasive engineering surveys and interpret survey information.
  • Provide technical support during construction and commissioning phases.

Skills, Qualifications & Experience

  • Degree (Bachelors or Masters) in a relevant engineering subject.
  • Affiliation with an Engineering Council registered Institution.
  • Experience working on multimillion‑pound commercial MEP projects in a multidisciplinary team.
  • Experience in the development and design of commercial and industrial HVAC systems from RIBA Stages 1–4.
  • Experience with heating, cooling and ventilation plant design.
  • Advanced level understanding of mechanical building services design.
  • Good knowledge of British Standards, design guides and the Building Regulations.
  • Awareness of health and safety and CDM regulations.
  • Competent in standard industry design software, including AutoCAD and REVIT.
