Hours: Full-time, permanent (40 hours per week Monday to Friday, occasional weekend work and on call duties on a rota system)

About us:

We are home to the UK’s largest Benedictine monastic community, rooted in the Rule of St Benedict. Our mission is to seek God through prayer and service, and to invite others to experience faith in action. Located in the Howardian Hills near York, the Abbey sits within an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and welcomes thousands of visitors each year to its Retreat Centre, Visitor Centre, Shop and Tea Room. The Trust, a registered charity, works alongside the monastic community to support this mission. With around 60 lay staff, the Trust delivers on a five-year strategy, choosing a Future Together, to ensure a sustainable, faith-led future for the Abbey and its valley home.

We are looking for an Estates Worker who will embrace the opportunity to work in a charitable organisation for our monastic community, tearoom, employees and guests. Working as part of the Grounds and Estates team, this role will have responsibility for general maintenance across the Estate. Any trade background would be advantageous. A building and maintenance background would be ideal due to the nature of the work and someone who demonstrates a due regard for health & safety. The successful candidate will be a true team player, able to demonstrate excellent organisational skills alongside an authentic commitment to the ethos and values of the Abbey. Main Responsibilities but not limited to:

  • Operation and basic maintenance of machinery and equipment.
  • Maintenance of the grounds throughout the estate.
  • Undertake general maintenance of site premises, fixtures and fittings.
  • Working independently off a job list.
  • The scope of work relates to various types of seasonal work including road sweeping as well as snow clearing and gritting of the footpaths and roads.
  • Supporting team members working on specific estate projects.
  • Undertake any other reasonable duties required in line with capabilities, the needs of the company, and the wider group.

Experience:

You will have a minimum of 2-years’ experience. We will also support with a full training plan. You will have high standards and a “can do” attitude; we are a small team so flexibility is vital. Own transport required – located Ampleforth.
