The Opportunity
We are looking for a Senior DevOps Engineer to join an existing team who will be hands-on running and improving our AWS platform, supporting engineering teams, and helping make our systems more secure and reliable. You will work primarily with Lambda, Fargate, Aurora, VPC and Security Hub, maintain IaC (Terraform, Serverless), and support CI/CD (GitHub Actions, CodeBuild/CodeDeploy). This is a practical, collaborative role — you will be solving day-to-day operational problems while helping plan and deliver longer-term improvements.
Your Responsibilities:
- Operate and troubleshoot production and staging systems in AWS (Lambda, Fargate, Aurora, VPC).
- Maintain and improve CI/CD pipelines using GitHub Actions and AWS CodeBuild/CodeDeploy.
- Author and update Terraform and Serverless configs; review pull requests for infrastructure changes.
- Respond to incidents, follow runbooks, participate in root-cause analysis and implement fixes.
- Work with engineers to onboard services to the platform and provide practical guidance on deployments, observability and cost.
- Implement security best practices: IAM hygiene, Security Hub findings, secrets management and least-privilege changes.
- Build and tune monitoring, alerts, logging and tracing to reduce noise and catch real issues early.
- Automate repetitive tasks (backups, health checks, tidy-ups) and keep runbooks and docs current.
Your Profile
- Collaborative team player who fits into an existing engineering team — shares knowledge, asks questions, and helps peers.
- Takes ownership for services they touch; pragmatic about shipping improvements incrementally.
- Comfortable learning on the job and seeking mentorship when needed.
- Communicates clearly and respectfully during incidents and in day-to-day work.
- Security- and reliability-minded: prefers small, testable changes that reduce risk.
Skills & Experience
- 4–8 years working with AWS services, ideally including Lambda, Fargate (or ECS), Aurora (or RDS), VPC and IAM.
- Hands-on experience with Terraform and/or Serverless Framework for infrastructure as code.
- Practical experience building CI/CD pipelines — GitHub Actions plus familiarity with CodeBuild/CodeDeploy or equivalents.
- Good debugging and scripting skills (Bash, Python, or similar) and comfort with containers/Docker.
- Familiarity with monitoring/observability tools (CloudWatch, X-Ray, or comparable) and writing meaningful alerts.
- Solid understanding of networking basics (subnets, security groups, routing, NAT) and security principles.
- Experience with incident response, postmortems and maintaining runbooks.
- Nice to have: AWS certifications (e.g. AWS Certified DevOps Engineer or Solutions Architect) and experience with cost optimisation and database ops for Aurora.
A competitive salary benchmarked against a peer group.
- 25 days holiday per year + your birthday off
- Opportunities for progression, development and learning new skills - £250 towards the cost of learning & development.
- Free onsite Nuffield Health gym & pool (London) and discounted gym membership elsewhere.
- GetActive with Aviva - Health and Wellbeing discounts on services and products.
- Interbank currency rates on travel money and international transfers.
- Free Eye Test and £50 up to the cost of glasses.
- EAP Service - Mental Health Services.
- Life Assurance Policy - x3 annual salary.
- Contributory pension scheme.
- Cycle to Work Scheme.
- Season Ticket Loans.
- Enhanced Parental Policies.
- Complimentary tea, coffee, soft drinks and fruit.
